Bearings
Bearings are a measure of direction taken from North.
If you were travelling North you would be travelling on a
bearing of 000°.
If you were travelling from the point P in the direction
shown by the arrow then you would be travelling on a
bearing of 075°.
000°.
N
Bearings are always measured
75° clockwise from North and are
written as three figures.

Bearing
The bearing from point A to point B is 105º.
What is the bearing from point B to point A?

Investigating back bearings
A ship sails 22 km from A on a bearing of
042o , and a further 30 km on a bearing of
090o to arrive at B. What is the distance
and bearing of B from A ?
A ship sails 20 km NE, then 18 km S,
and then stops.
a. How far is it from its starting point
when it stops?

b. On what bearing must it sail to return

to its starting point?
A man walks 750 m on a bearing of
030o. He then walks on a bearing of 315o
until he is due north of his starting point,
and stops.

a. How far does he walk on the bearing

of 315o?

b. How far is he from his starting point

when he stops?
