 What is Corrosion?
 Sample Preparation
 Corrosion Instrument
 Corrosion Analysis

2
Corrosion
• Corrosion is a natural
process, which converts a
refined metal to a more
chemically-stable form.
• It is the gradual destruction
of materials (usually
metals).

3
Types of Corrosion

 General Attack Corrosion

 Localized Corrosion
 Galvanic Corrosion
 Microbial corrosion
 High-temperature
corrosion

4
Sample Preparation
Mild Steel
Mild steel was used in our corrosion
analysis testing. It is the most
common form of steel having
relatively low price. Mild steel
contains approximately 0.05–0.25%
carbon.

6
Slow Meta Cut
A sample having dimensions 1×1
cm was prepared using slow meta
cut in order to get accurate
dimensions.

7
Soldering
Soldering was done in order to
join the copper wire with the
sample.

8
Soldering Iron
• Hand tool used in soldering
• Composed of a heated metal tip
and an insulated handle.
• Heating is achieved by passing
an electric current through a
resistive heating element.

9
Soldering Wire
Tin-lead (Sn-Pb) solders, also called soft
solders, are commercially available with
tin concentrations between 5% and 70%
by weight.

10
Soldering Gel
• Flux is a chemical cleaning agent or
purifying agent
• Flux facilitates soldering process.
• Flux also serves as a heat-transfer medium

11
Copper Wire
A copper wire is a single
electrical conductor made of
copper. Copper wire and
cable is used in power
generation, power
transmission,
telecommunications,
electronics circuitry.

12
Mounting
• Mounting is done to handle small
specimens.
• Provides edge retention
• We performed cold mounting in
order to insulate our sample.

13
Epoxy and Hardener
• Commercially available
• Epoxies have the lowest
shrinkage of all cold mounting
resins.
• The curing time is relatively
long.

14
Grinding and Polishing
• Grinding and polishing was done of the
surface.
• This operation was performed in order
to clean the surface.

15
Corrosion Instrument
Instrument:
• Gamry Reference 600
• Working, Counter and Reference
electrode
• Potentiostat
• Electrochemical cell
• Computer

17
Potentiostat
A Potentiostat is the
electronic hardware
required to control
electrochemical cell and
run most electro
analytical experiments.

18
Electrochemical Cell
Electrochemical cell is the cell
consisting of 3, 4 or 5 electrodes.
Reference electrode
Working electrode
Counter electrode

23
Corrosion Rate
• Speed at which any given metal deteriorates in a specific environment.
• The speed, is dependent upon environmental conditions as well as the
type, and condition, of the metal.
• Corrosion rate is calculated using the Tafel Fit method.
• Unit of corrosion rate is mill inches per year (mpy)

24
Precautions
• Read the manual carefully before operation.
• No vibration near the instrument.
• No noise near the instrument.
• The sample must be properly insulated.
• Personal Protective Equipment must be worn.
