It is also called binary choice question, because it is required to mark either True or False. What happens: Respondent Analyzes a statement Assess whether true or false Marks an answer (True or False) Nature Measures the ability to identify whether statements of fact are correct Contains two possible responses for each item Requires students to select a response Tests student’s recall and comprehension Advantages Quick and easy to score Objectivity in scoring Can cover lots of content areas on a single exam If constructed well, can be highly reliable in assessing student knowledge Language and hand writing is not affected Disadvantages Difficult to construct and administer It may lead students to word for word memorization Encourage guessing, and reward for correct guesses Easy to cheat Disadvantages (Continue) It is difficult to discriminate between students that know the material and students who do not Not measure higher mental abilities (like creativity, organizing power,) Principles /Suggestions for writing True/False 1. Use clear and simple language 2. Avoid negative statements— double negative e.g., Pakistan is not un-Islamic Country (True/False). 3. Use balance number of true and false items 4. It should be absolutely true or false e.g. Islamabad is the capital of Pakistan and it is situated in the province of Sindh (T/F) 5. Avoid specific words such as All, None, Always, Never → False & Some, Often → True
6. Avoid tricky statements e.g.,
Pakistan Came into being on 14 August 1947 B.C. (T/F) 7. Arrange true and false items randomly, not in any specific order. 8. Avoid lifting exact wording from the textbook. 9.
