Abstract
This study aims to produce a rechargeable source of alternative
electricity that uses solar panel to recharge the battery. The procedure in
making Solar Portable Outlet (SPO) were carefully planned, studied,
constructed and performed. Based on the tests performed that SPO can be
used for 507.67 minutes for light bulb, 328 minutes for radio and 104.33
minutes for electric fan. The data also showed that for the charging time of
cell phones, laptop and flashlights using the Solar Portable Outlet and the
power from the PALECO has no significant difference. The Solar Portable
Outlet was fully charged in just 128.33 minutes. The researchers therefore
concluded that the Solar Portable Outlet can make devices like electric fan,
light bulb and radio work. It is also concluded that Solar Portable Outlet can
charge gadgets like cell phones, laptop and flash light and that there is no
significant difference between the charging time using the Solar Portable
Outlet and the electrical power from Palawan Electric Cooperative.

a. Background of the study – state the
rationale of the study. Explains briefly why
the investigator chose this study to work on.
Introduction
Background of the Study

Climate Change is now felt by people around the world and even in the
Philippines. Tropical Storm Ondoy (international codename: Ketsana) on September 25,
2009 causes a lot of destructions to properties. At least 10 people were reported dead or
more than 1,800 were forced to evacuate. Many homes have gone wasted. Former
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo even declared a state of calamity in Metro Manila and
in 25 Luzon provinces as heavy rains brought by the storm caused the worst flooding
seen in the capital in some 20 years. Close to 2,000 people in different areas in Metro
Manila were forced to flee their homes and major thoroughfares were closed to traffic.
(Philippine Daily Inquirer, 2009)
Introduction

The Monsoon rains last August 6, 2012 that strike the Metro
Manila causes 95 death casualties and a total number of affected people
rose to 4 million. According to the report of the National Disaster Risk
Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), a total of 95 people have
been confirmed dead, 68 of whom were due to drowning. Twelve of the
deaths were due to landslides, four due to electrocution, three due to a
lightning strike, three to heart attack, two to fallen trees, and one was due
to a nervous breakdown. Two deaths were still of undetermined causes,
the NDRRMC said. (Philippine Daily Inquirer, 2012)
Introduction
To avoid electrocution, power was cut in many parts of the city as a
protective measure in some districts to prevent people attempting to escape
the floodwaters from being electrocuted by fallen lines. But during those
times, communication lines should always be open, always listening to radios
and flash light are very important. But how can communication lines be open
all the time if the power was cut down? How can they listen to the radio if the
batteries are all out and how can the flash lights be used during night time for
how many days if they cannot charge the battery? Power is very important
during typhoon but because of unavoidable circumstances, power should be
cut down.
Introduction

Because of the said problem, the researchers

would like to produce a device, a portable outlet that is
solar powered, that can be charged during daytime and
can be used to charge gadgets that can help those who
are affected by calamities.

b. Statement of Problem / Objectives – nature and scope of the problem

should be presented with clarity. Two types of objective may be presented.

○General objective – this is related to the problem as given in the early part of the section.

○Specific objective – this states the purpose of each experiment conducted

Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to make a Solar Portable Outlet
(SPO). Specifically, this study sought the answers to the
following questions.

1. How many hours will Solar Portable Outlet

(SPO) last while using the following wattage?

a. Light Bulb (9 watts)

b. Radio (10 watts)

c. Electric Fan (65 watts)

Statement of the Problem

2. How long will the charging of the following gadgets last

using SPO and the electric power produced by the Palawan
Electric Cooperative (PALECO)?
Cellular phone(0.93 amperes/ 3.5 Watts)

Laptop(4.32 amperes /65 watts )

Flashlight(0.67 amperes / 2 watts)

Statement of the Problem

●3. How long will the charging of the Solar Portable Outlet
(SPO) last using solar panel?
●4. Is there a significant difference between the charging time
in minutes of the cellular phone, laptop and flashlight using
SPO and the electric power produced by the Palawan Electric
Cooperative (PALECO).
Hypothesis

There is no significant difference

between the charging time in minutes of the
cellular phone, laptop and flashlight using
SPO and the electric power produced by the
Palawan Electric Cooperative (PALECO).

c. Significance of the study –
states the importance of the study
Significance of the study
This study is significant because it will be a great help in many
people and even in the environment in many ways. One, is it is useful
especially in times of calamities such as typhoons where the power was
already cut down, where there are floods and people are already on their
rooftop to escape from the rushing water. Using the Solar Portable Outlet,
they can call for help if the problem is that the cell phone battery is already
out of charge. It can be used to charge their flashlights, as a source of power
for their radios, electric fans, and other appliances. Second, it is also useful
for adventurers who frequently go to many exploratory areas which are
usually not reached by electricity. It is also a help in conserving the
environment by utilizing energy coming from the sun. Moreover, since solar
energy is available at no cost, one can reduce its traditional electricity
consumption and will pay less in its electric bill.

the extent and coverage of the study.
Scope and Limitations
This study entitled Solar Portable Outlet
focused on producing a rechargeable source of
alternative electricity. The product makes use of
solar energy to recharge the battery. Solar
Portable Outlet is only limited on testing a 9
watts light bulb, a 10 watts radio, a 65 watts
electric fan and gadgets like cell phone (0.95
amperes), laptop (4.32 amperes) and flashlight
(1.3 amperes).

For making the Solar Portable Outlet
The materials used in making Solar
Portable Outlet are two MF5L-B batteries 10-hr
5Ah, wire, inverter, 2 outlets, case, solar panel
(20 Volts), 2 inch nails, DC plug, hinge, screw,
switch, fuse, fuse protector, 8 eye terminals, volt

Materials

For Testing the Solar Portable Outlet

SPO, 9 watts light bulb, radio, electric fan,
solar panel, laptop, cellular phone, flashlight,
solar panel, and stopwatch
Methodology
Procedure

Making the case:

Using a saw, cut a one-inch thick ply board into six pieces: the front and the back,
each measuring 6 inches by 7 inches; the upper and the lower cover, each measuring 8 inches
by 9 inches; and the sides, both measures 8 inches by 9 inches. Connected all the pieces
except the front cover to form an open box using 2-inch nails and a hammer. Connected the
front cover of the box using two hinges. This served as the door of the rectangular case. Cut
another ply board (9 inches in length and 6 inches in width) which served as the divider of
the case. Connected it using a 2-inch nail and hammer. At a side of the case, made a
rectangular hole where the outlet can fit using driller. Placed a screw at the case’s door using
a screw driver to serve as the handle.

The researchers however encourage additional related

studies for clarification and determination of the capability of SOLAR
PORTABLE OUTLET. Other procedures may also be applied such as
improving the appearance of the product to be able to make it more
attractive, adding and improving some components to make the
product easier to use and improving the amperage of the battery to
be used to increase its capacity to carry more wattage and using
solar panel with higher voltage. The usage of automatic voltage
regulator (AVR) is also suggested for the increase in time duration of
usage of devices.
