Society Types
• Pre-Industrial Societies
• Industrial society
• Post-Industrial society
Culture is a complex whole that includes the ideas, customs, and social behavior
of a particular people or society.
On a broader scale, society consists of the people and institutions around us, our
shared beliefs, and our cultural ideas.
WHAT IS SOCIETY?
In the view of Gerhard Lenski (1924–) societies
can be defined in terms of their technological
sophistication. This implies that as a society
advances, so does its use of technology.
SOCIETY: TYPES
They used simple technology and machines;
The communities were small in size and largely rural in
structure;
They were dependent largely on local natural resources;
Economic production was limited to the amount of labor a
human being could provide (subsistence economy);
They had a very small number of specialized
occupations.
1. PRE-INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY
There were different types of pre-industrial societies:
1. Hunter-Gatherer Society
2. Pastoral Society
3. Horticultural Society
4. Agricultural Society
5. Feudal Society
1. PRE-INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY
1. Hunter-gatherer Society…
• This was the basic structure of human
society, until about 10,000–12,000 years ago.
• It covers 99% of human society, so we were
hunters and gatherers until very recently.
• These groups were based around kinship or
tribes of 60-100 persons.
• Hunter-gatherers relied on their surroundings
for survival—they hunted wild animals and
foraged for uncultivated/wild plants for food.
• When resources became scarce, the group
moved to a new area to find sustenance,
meaning they were nomadic.
2. INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY
• Products such as paper and glass became available to the
average person, and the quality and accessibility of education
and health care increased.
2. INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY
• Known as Information, digital or
service society, a recent
development.
3. POST-INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY
• Members of a post-industrial society are likely to be employed as sellers
of services—software programmers or business consultants, for
example—instead of producers of goods.
3. POST-INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY
