What is Edema?
"Edema" is the medical term for swelling. Body parts swell from
injury or inflammation.
Edema happens when your small blood vessels leak fluid into nearby
tissues. That extra fluid builds up, which makes the tissue swell. It can
happen almost anywhere in the body.

Lower limb edema is an output of liquid plasma from blood vessels


into the interstitial tissue in the legs. It is manifested by an increase in
the volume of one or both legs, in whole or in part.
causes

 sitting or staying in one position for too long


 eating too much salty food
 being pregnant
Risk factors

 High blood pressure medications


 Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
 Steroid drugs
 Estrogens
 certain diabetes medications called thiazolidinediones
symptoms
 Swelling of puffiness of the tissue diectly under your skin, especially in your legs
 Stretched or shiny skin
 Skin that retains a dimple (pist), after being pressed for several seconds
 Increased abdominal size
Complications

 Increasingly painful swelling


 Difficulty walking
 Stiffnes
 Stretched skin, which can become itchy and uncomfortable
 Increased risk of infection in the swollen area
 Scarring between layers of tissue
 Decreased blood circulation
 Decreased elasticity of arteries, veins, joints and muscles
 Increased risk of skin ulcers
Prevention

 eat low-salt foods;


 not smoke;
 not consume alcohol;
 pursue physical activity every day if possible, at least three times a week for
30 minutes;
 Avoid lying down or sitting for too long;
 sleep with his legs elevated.
treatment
Ankle Pumps

 Sit in a chair whith your back straight and legs extended and spread slightly apart.
 Begin whith your toes pointed up, so the soles of your feet are flat.
 Point your toes downward, as though pressing down on the gas pedal of a car, and hold
for a count.
 Return to the starting position, as though letting up on the gas. This completes one
repetition of the stretch.
 With your legs stretched out in front of you, poin your toes and hold for one
second
 Bend your ankles to bring your toes toward your shin and hold for one second
 Repeat 30 times
