 THE MOON
 “The solar system consists of the sun, nine
planets, some 60 or so moons, and assorted
minor materials(asteroids, meteorids, comets,
dust, and gas). All of these objects are tiny in
comparison to the distances that separate
them.”
 The collection of eight planets and their
moons in orbit round the sun, together with
smaller bodies in the form of asteroids,
meteorids, and comets.
 The sun, eight planets, satellites and some
other celestial bodies known as asteroids and
meteoroids form the solar system. We often
call it a solar system family, with the sun as
its head.
o Mercury is the smallest and inner most planet
in the solar system.
o Its orbital period around the sun of 88 days is
the shortest of all the planets in the solar
system.
o Venus is the second planet from the sun,
orbiting it every 224.7 earth days. It has the
longest rotation period of any planet in the
solar system and rotates in the opposite
direction to most other planets.
o It has no natural satellites.
o It is named after the Roman goddess of love
and beauty.
o Earth is the biggest of the terrestrial planets
and the fifth largest planet overall.
o Earth is the third planet from the sun and the
fifth largest in the solar system.
o Just slightly larger than nearby venus, earth is
the biggest of the terrestrial planets.
o Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and
the second smallest planet in the solar
system after mercury.
o It is a giant planet with a mass one-
thousandth that of the sun, but two and a
half times that of all the other planets in the
solar system combined.
o Jupiter and saturn are gas giants; the other
two giant planets, uranus and neptune are ice
giants.
o Jupiter has been known to astronomers since
antiquity.
o Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and
the second largest in the solar system, after
jupiter.
o It is a gas giant with an average radius about
nine times that of earth.
o Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun
and is the third largest in the solar system.
o It was discovered by William Herschel in
1781.
o It has an equatorial diameter of 51,800
kilometers and orbits the sun once every
84.01earth years.
o Neptune’s winds travel at more than 1,500
mph, and are the fastest planetary winda in
the solar system.
o Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun.
o It was the first planet to get its existence
predicted by mathematical calculations before
it was actually seen through a telescope on
sept. 23,1846.
o The sun is in the centre of the solar system.
o It is huge and made up of extremely hot gases.
o It provides the pulling force that binds the solar
system.
o The sun is the ultimate source of heat and light
for the solar system. But that tremendous heat is
not felt so much by us because despite being our
nearest star, it is far away from us.
o The sun is about 150 million km away from the
earth
o The earth is the third nearest planet to the sun.
o In size, it is the fifth largest planet. It is slightly
flattened at the poles. That is why, its shape is
described as a geoid. Geoid means an earth-like
shape.
o Conditions favourable to support life are probably
found only on the earth. The earth is neither too hot
nor too cold. It has water and air, which are very
essential for our survival. The air has life supporting
gases like oxygen. Because of these reasons, the
earth is a unique planet in the solar system.
o From the outer space, the earth appears blue because
its two- thirds surface is covered by water. It is
therefore, called a blue planet
o Our earth has only one satellite, that is, the
moon.
o Its diametre is only one-quarter that of the
earth. It appears so big because it is nearer to
uor planet than other celestial bodies. It is about
3,84,400 km away from us.
o The moon moves around the earth in about 27
days.it takes exactly the same time to complete
one spin. As a result, only one side of the moon
is visible to us on the earth.
o The moon does not have conditions favourable
for life.it has neither water nor air.
 Apart from the stars, planets and satellites,
there are numerous tiny bodies which also
move around the sun. these bodies are called
asteroids. they are found between the orbits
of mars and jupiter. Scientists are of the view
that asteroids are parts of a planet which
exploded many years back.
 The small pieces of rocks which move around
the sun are called meteoroids.
