Present continuous

• We use the present continuous for actions which are happening


at the time of speaking.
• We form the present continuous using:
subject + am / is / are + -ing form of the main verb
Affirmative
I am reading magazines. I’m reading magazines.
Negative
He is not making models. He isn’t making models.
Interrogative Short answers
Are you taking pictures? Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.
• We usually use the contracted form of be after subject
pronouns: I’m, you’re, he’s, she’s, it’s, we’re, they’re

• We can use the present continuous with present time


expressions such as today, now, right now and at the moment.
They’re playing volleyball at the moment.
We’re reading comics right now.
• Remember the spelling rules for adding the -ing ending:
Normal – add -ing:

Verb ending in -e – remove the e and add -ing:

Short vowel + consonant – double the consonant:

• We use the present simple for general truths, regular activities,


and routines or habits.

• We can use it with adverbs of frequency, such as always, usually,
often, sometimes, almost never and never.

• We usually use the contracted form in the negative.
