VISITING THE DENTIST AND HYGIENIST 
- BETTER ORAL HEALTH FOR ALL –

PREPARED BY : DR. HANANA

WHAT DOES THE HEALTH OF YOUR MOUTH
HAVE TO DO WITH YOUR OVERALL HEALTH?
• Good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease and
can help you keep your teeth as you get older.
• An unhealthy mouth, especially if you have gum disease, may increase your risk of serious
health problems such as heart attack, stroke and poorly controlled diabetes.
• In A word, plenty. A look inside of saliva can tell about what's going on inside your body.  More
than 500 species of bacteria thrive in your mouth at any given time.
• Taking care of your teeth helps prevent plaque , which is a clear film of bacteria that sticks to
your teeth.
• The bacteria break it down into acids that eat away tooth enamel, causing holes is called
cavities.
• Plaque also causes gingivitis, which is gum disease that can make your gums red, swollen,
and sore.

BEFORE TOOTHPASTE WAS INVENTED

• Long ago, as people got older, their teeth would rot away and be very painful.
• To get rid of a toothache, they had their teeth pulled out. Finally, people learned that
cleaning their teeth was important, but they didn't have toothpaste right away.
• What people used long ago to clean teeth ? :
• 1. Ground-up chalk or charcoal 3. Ashes
• 2. Lemon juice 4. Tobacco and honey mixed
together

• About 100 years ago, someone finally created a minty cream to clean teeth.
• Tooth brushing became popular during world war ii. The U.S. Army gave brushes and
toothpaste to all soldiers, and they learned to brush twice a day .
• BUT, back then they were made of metal !! However, today they're made of soft
plastic.
• There are plenty of toothpaste choices to choose from a lots of colors and flavors, and
some are made just for kids.
• When you're choosing a toothpaste, make sure it contains fluoride. Fluoride makes

the legs, swelling in some parts of the body, and sometimes ulceration of the gums and loss of
teeth.
• Symptoms of vitamin C deficiency can start to appear after 8 to 12 weeks. Early signs include a
loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, irritability, and lethargy.
• 14 to 18 years: 75 mg for men and 65 mg for women
• Foods that contain vitamin C include:
--- Fruits, such as oranges, lemons, strawberries, blackberries, guava and kiwi.
--- Vegetables especially like tomatoes, carrots, bell peppers, broccoli, potatoes, cabbage, and
