Definition : Endangered Species
Organisms whose
number have declined
rapidly and species
might be wiped off
from the earth in near
future are called
Endangered Species
Endangered Species in India

Lion
Pea Cock
Indian
Hornbill
Orchids
Rauwolfia
serpentina
Criteria For Endanger
• A) Reduction in population size
• B) Geographic range in the form of either extent of occurrence
or area of occupancy.
• C) Population estimated to number fewer than 2,500 mature
individuals
• E) Quantitative analysis showing the probability of
extinction in the wild is at least 20% within 20 years or five
generations
RED DATA BOOK
World Wildlife Federation
(WWF) published a book
containing the details of
endangered and threatened
species of Flora and
Fauna called as RED
DATA BOOK or RED

BAR GRAPH OF SOME
ENDANGERED SPECIES
FACTS AND STATS
 There are more than 1000 endangered species worldwide.
 There are more than 3500 protected wildlife areas in the world.
They cover 5 million sq. miles or 3% of our total land area.
 More than 16,000 of the world’s mammals, birds and plants are
threatened with extinction.
 ¼ of the known 5487 wild mammal species on the planet are
threatened with extinction. That’s 1372 mammals, almost gone
from the face of the Earth.
 Most species in the world, will become extinct before they are
even known to man.
Endangered Species : World
CAUSES

-Habitat Destruction
-Fast paced changes= little or no time for species
to react and adjust to new circumstances.
-Primary cause of species endangerment.
-Humans are what cause this destruction.
Everyday about 100 species are lost due to
deforestation. That’s about 27,000 species a year!
Over half of the Earth’s original forests have
disappeared.
Tropical forests contain half of the Earth’s species.
17 million hectares are cleared/burned every year.

URBANIZATION
Increased habitat loss.
Bulldozing, paving, development, etc. for houses, malls,
businesses and roads all destroy habitat.
Illegal Wildlife Trade/Overexploitation
Caused by the trade in animal parts.
Body Parts Trade.
Demands for items like rhino horns, walrus tusks and
tiger bones in SE Asian countries like China.
Live animals are taken for the pet trade or their parts
exported for medicines or food.
Thousands of species= part of the illegal international
wildlife trade.
Ex. African/Asian elephants, parrots, rhinos, antelopes.
Causes massive declines in the numbers of many species.
Commercial Fishing

Overfishing affects fish populations and

they begin to decrease.
About 1000 whales and dolphins drown
everyday from getting tangled in fishing
gear.
Conservation

Conservation takes place in two ways:-

1) Captive Breeding

2) Private Farming
Captive breeding
Captive breeding is the process of breeding rare or
endangered species in human controlled
environments with restricted settings, such as
wildlife reserves, zoos and other conservation
facilities. Captive breeding is meant to save
species from extinction and so stabilize the
population of the species that it will not
disappear.
Private Farming
Whereas poaching substantially reduces endangered
animal populations, legal, for-profit, private farming
does the opposite. It has substantially increased the
populations of the southern black rhinoceros and
southern white rhinoceros. Dr Richard Emslie, a
scientific officer at the IUCN, said of such programs,
"Effective law enforcement has become much easier now
that the animals are largely privately owned... We have
been able to bring local communities into the
conservation programmed.
ENDANGERED SPECIES DAY
Endangered Species Day
highlights the plight of
many at-risk and critically
endangered species and
highlights ways in which
we can alter our behaviour
in order to help protect
and save these creatures.
