TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL BY

BIOLOGICAL METHODS

Fabregar, Noel Christian M.

BIOLOGICAL METHODS
 Treatment methods in which the removal of contaminants is brought
about by biological activity.
 Biological treatment is used primarily to remove the biodegradeable
organic substances (colloidal or dissolved) and nutrients (nitrogen and
phosphorous) from wastewater.
 Basically, these substances are converted into gases that can escape to
the atmosphere and into the biological cell tissue that can be removed
by settling.
FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE LEVEL OF TREATMENT ACHIEVABLE
WITH BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES

The type of Organic Contaminant

The concentration of the Contaminant

The Presence of Inhibitors

The extent of acclimatization

Reaction Times
SEVERAL BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT PROCESSES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED
AND APPLIED TO MUNICIPAL AND INDUSTRIAL WASTES.

Activated
Activated Sludge with Trickling Rotating Fluidized Bed
Sludge Powdered Filter Biological Contactor
Activated Contactor
Carbon
ACTIVATED SLUDGE

 it is probably the optimum proven technology for biodegradation of

organics in an aqueous waste stream.
ACTIVATED SLUDGE WITH POWDERED ACTIVATED
CARBON
 it is essentially the same as with conventional activate sludge processes,
with the exception that powdered activated carbon (PAC) is included
with the microbial sludge.
TRICKLING FILTERS

 this is not actually a filter, but is a bed of plastic or rock packing or other
support media, on which bacterial slime can grow.
ROTATING BIOLOGICAL CONTACTOR (RBC)

 In this case the bacterial slime grows on the surface of a series of slowly
rotating vertical discs (or other media) attached to a central shaft, which
are partially submerged in the contaminated wastewater.
FLUIDIZED BED CONTACTOR

 In these systems, pre-oxygenated waste water is circulated through a bed

of sand or similar media covered with microbial growth.
