Reproductive System
Ovary
The primary reproductive organ of the
female responsible for the production and
maturation of the egg cells.
The ovaries also secretes hormones like
estrogen (responsible for the female
secondary sexual characteristics and affects
growth and development) and
progesterone (maintains the lining of the
uterus in preparation for pregnancy).
Females have a pair of ovaries.
Fallopian tube or oviduct
Serves as a passageway for the
egg cell from the ovary to the
uterus.
It is also the usual site of
fertilization.
Uterus
a chamber that provides a place for a
developing embryo.
Cervix
Also known as “the neck of the uterus,”
this consist of smooth muscles. It
secretes mucus that helps the sperm
cells to move into the uterus.
Vagina
Known as “birth canal” for the
baby during birth.
It provides a channel for the
semen that enters the uterus,
and for the blood that comes out
of the body during menstruation.
The male and female reproductive organs
or gonads differ in the number of sex cells
(also known as gametes) produced.
A male can continually produce millions of
sperm cells from puberty until his death
provided that he is healthy.
A female produces approximately one egg
every 28 days from puberty until the
menopausal stage, a period when she stops
producing eggs.
