PRE-ENGINEERED

STEEL BUILDINGS

MUHAMMAD WASIM ISHAQ

Jr. Engineer (Civil), CMTL WAPDA

1
Introduction

 A Pre-Engineered Building is a metal

building that consists of light gauge metal roof
panels on steel purlins spanning between
rigid frames with light gauge metal wall
cladding.

2
Introduction
 A combination of built up section, hot rolled
section, cold formed elements and profiled
sheets.
 In addition, diagonal rod bracing is required in
the walls to resist horizontal loading on the
building (i.e., wind loads and/or seismic).
 Rod bracing is also provided within the roof
framing to resist "racking", or twisting of the
building.
3
Introduction

 Designing and Fabrication is done in factory

 Building components are brought to site then
fixed/jointed at the site
 All connections are bolted.

PEB Design

 Since steel is the Expensive Material , So The

idea was that section should be provided as
per B.M.D(Bending Moment Diagram).
 This lead to the saving in steel and
development of PEB concept.

PEB V Conventional Steel
Buildings

Evaluation Criteria PEB Buildings Conventional Steel

Self Weight 30% lighter more heavy
Primary Members tapered section Hot rolled “I” section
Secondary Members light weight rolled “I” or “C” section which
framed “Z” and “C” are heavy in weight.

Evaluation Criteria PEB Buildings Conventional Steel
Foundation Foundation-simple Expensive, heavy
design, easy to foundation required.
construct & light wt.
Erection Cost & Accurate and Well 20 % More than PEB,
Process known, Easy Fast Step Process Slow ,More
by Step. Labors Required.
Seismic Resistance low weight flexible Rigid heavy
frames offer higher weight structure do not
resistance to seismic perform well in
forces seismic zones
Overall Price 30 % Lower Higher Cost

PEB Vs Concrete Buildings
Evaluation Criteria PEB Buildings Concrete Buildings
Building Dimensions Suitable for Span 20-30 Suitable for Short Span
m , Can Sustain much Buildings, 5 to 8 m
Larger Spans
Erection Time Fast Erection, Virtually Slow Erection and time
no idle time consuming , the
contractor have to wait
for 14-28 Days in order
to get concrete harden
Cost Low man Power Construction cost is
high

26
Famous Steel Buildings:
The Eiffel Tower Paris,France

This structure, the world’s most recognized

landmark, must always head up this type of
list.
It was built in 1889 for the World’s Fair and
has stood in Paris ever since.
In fact, at 320 meters it was the tallest
building in the world for nearly 42 years until
the Chrysler Building went up.

27
Famous Steel Buildings:
The Brooklyn Bridge New York, US

28
Famous Steel Buildings:
The Brooklyn Bridge New York, US
One of ten bridges in New York awarded
historic landmark status, the Brooklyn
Bridge (famously sold to tourists repeatedly)
is 130 years old and took years to complete
because of all the heavy metal.
It is the oldest New York bridge still open to
vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Famous Steel Buildings:
Burj Khalifa Dubai, United Arab Emirates

30
Famous Steel Buildings:
Burj Khalifa Dubai, United Arab Emirates
This is currently the world’s tallest manmade
structure at 829.8 meters. It was completed in 2009
after nearly 5 years of construction using a bundled
tube design to reduce the amount of steel required.
This building contains 163 floors including an 11-
hectare park, an observation deck on the 124th
floor, and a 275 meter long fountain that shoots
water 150 meters into the air. The elevators must
travel 504 meters.

Conclusion
• PEB construction is 30 to 40% faster than
masonry construction.
• PEB buildings provide good insulation effect and
would be highly suitable for a tropical country
like Pakistan.
• The pre-engineered building calls for very fast
construction of buildings and with good aesthetic
looks and quality construction.

36
Conclusion
• PEB concept has been very successful and well
established across the Globe like in America,
Australia and is presently expanding in U.K and
European countries.
• Pre-engineered Buildings can be used
extensively for construction of industrial and
residential buildings in Pakistan specially in
Seismically Active areas.
