perfect.

JAMES 1:13
When tempted, no one should say,

“God is tempting me.” For God cannot be
tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;

Evil Desire – Sin – Death

James 1:15
(15)Then, after desire has
conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin,
when it is full-grown, gives birth to
death.

D. Dead, Ephesians 2:1-3

1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and

sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the
ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the
air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are
disobedient.3 All of us also lived among them at one
time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a] and following its
desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature
deserving of wrath.

Conclusion
Ephesians 2:4-9 4 But because
5
of his great love for
us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ
even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by
grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with
Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in
Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might
show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in
his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you
have been saved, through faith—and this is not from
yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so
that no one can boast.

Scripture Reference: Luke 14:25-33

Large crowds were travelling with Jesus,

and turning to them he said: “If anyone
comes to me and does not hate his father
and mother, his wife and children, his
brothers and sisters – yes, even his own
life – he cannot be my disciple.”

“Suppose one of you wants to build a
tower. Will he not first sit down and
estimate the cost to see if he has enough
money to complete it? For if he lays the
foundation and is not able to finish it,
everyone who sees it will ridicule him,
saying, “This fellow began to build and was
not able to finish.”

“Or suppose a king is about to go to war
against another king. Will he not first sit
down and consider whether he is able with
ten thousand men to oppose the one
coming against him with twenty thousand? If
he is not able, he will send a delegation
while the other is still a long way off and will
ask for terms of peace. In the same way,
any of you who does not give up everything
he has cannot be my disciple.”

A. First, Let Us Study Verses 25-27

Large crowds were travelling with Jesus, and

turning to them he said: “If anyone comes to me
and does not hate his father and mother, his wife
and children, his brothers and sisters – yes, even
his own life – he cannot be my disciple.”

Jesus spells out the cost of discipleship.
1. What were the conditions laid down by
Jesus for a person who wants to become His
disciple?

Answer: He should “hate” his father and

mother, his wife and children, his brothers and
sisters, even his own life. He should carry his
cross and follow Jesus.
2/19/2018
2. Verse 26 says we are to “hate” our family
members and even ourselves. It means
we should love Jesus far more than we
love our family and ourselves. There
shouldn’t be an area in our lives that we
won’t allow Him to touch.

2/19/2018
3. Jesus doesn’t ask us for more than He
gave. He endured all kinds of suffering
while on earth, and gave up His life for us
on the cross. So when He asks us to
“carry our cross” (v 27), He means that
we should “die to ourselves” and “to the
world,” and live with Him.

2/19/2018
How do we apply this?
A. Somebody hurts us deeply. What used
to be our reaction, and what should be
our reaction now?

Answer: We used to harbor bitterness and

unforgiveness, and we wanted to take
revenge. Now that our egos have died, we
forgive just as Jesus forgives.
2/19/2018
B. How do you spend your time? Why do you
do what you do? What are your motives?

Answer: We used to spend our time and

effort acquiring wealth, position, and
fame. Now that our egos have died and
we follow Jesus, we spend our time and
effort to please God and help people.

B. Let Us Now Study Verses 28-30
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower.
Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost
to see if he has enough money to complete it?
For if he lays the foundation and is not able
to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule
him, saying, “This fellow began to build and
was not able to finish.”

Counting the Cost of Becoming a Disciple
1. To what did Jesus compare a man who
wants to be His disciple? (v 28)

Answer: A man who wants to build a

tower first sits down to estimate whether
he has enough money to complete it.

2/19/2018
2. Why do you think Jesus gave the
illustration of the unfinished tower? Why
do some who profess to be believers fail
to continue in their faith?

Answer: Many people are attracted to Christ

because they just want to go to heaven. But they
are not prepared to walk the way of the cross. They
decide hastily to follow Him and are perhaps aware
of some immediate costs, but have not thought
2/19/2018
through the long-term cost.
C. Let Us Now Study Verses 31-33
“Or suppose a king is about to go to war against
another king. Will he not first sit down and consider
whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose
the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If
he is not able, he will send a delegation while the
other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of
peace. In the same way, any of you who does not give
up everything he has cannot be my disciple.”

Counting the cost of Not Becoming a Disciple
1. a) What kind of decision did the king of
the 10,000-strong army face?

Answer: To fight or surrender.

2/19/2018
b) What did Jesus say was the only sensible
decision for this king to make?

Answer: To surrender.

2/19/2018
C. What did the two kings represent?

Answer: The king with the 10,000 army

represents us. The king with 20,000 army
represents God.

2/19/2018
2. a) Is it possible for a true Christian to be
just a believer and not a disciple of
Christ?
Answer: No. A person who doesn’t want to pay the
cost of discipleship, desiring only to be “a believer”
(so he can go to heaven) is like a member of the
crowd in Luke 14:25. These people want something
from Jesus, but they are not willing to follow Him.

2/19/2018
Jesus as Savior and Jesus as Lord are two
sides of a coin. We cannot have one
without the other. Romans 10:9 says, “If
you confess with your mouth Jesus is
Lord... you will be saved.” 1 Corinthians
6:19, 20 says “You are not your own; you
were bought at a price.” Jesus great
commission to us is “Go and make
disciples of all nations...”
2/19/2018
b) “But the standard seems so high! I don’t
know if I can meet it.”

Answer: Being a disciple does not mean one is

perfect. Simon Peter is a disciple, yet he
denied the Lord Jesus three times. But he
repented afterwards. A disciple is one who has
surrendered his life to Jesus, and is trying to
follow Him.
2/19/2018
c) “Does it also mean that I have to give up all
my money to God now, and become a
pastor?”

Answer: Not really. It is true, all your money

belongs to God. But God knows you have your living
expenses. Whenever He asks anything from us, He
prepares our heart for it. So don’t worry. What’s
important is that you consider money not as
something you own, but as something given to you
by God to manage.
2/19/2018
Regarding being a pastor, God does not call
everyone to be a pastor. Not everyone is
gifted and qualified to be a pastor. But
our life belongs to God whatever
profession He places us in.

D. Your choice

Now that you know what it takes to

follow Jesus and what it means if you
don’t follow Him, what is your decision?
Are you willing to give your life to Him
and let Him take control?

Answer it in the most sensible way.
