What does UK law say about protesting?

• Right to protest is a fundamental democratic freedom

• UK law allows individuals and groups to protest in
public to share their point of view
• If protests involve a march or procession the police
have to be informed about it
• The police can alter the route of a march or ban it if
they feel: the march may intimidate people or might
lead to violence
BUT! A protest which turns violent
is called a riot and illegal.

Terrorism = violent acts which usually hurt innocent civilians with the aim to achieve a
political goal

Terrorists claim that they are fighting…

• …against social and political injustice (for example if a group of people are denied
their human rights)
• …against poverty
• …to assert their religious beliefs, especially if they feel they are denied to have them

Others say that through their actions terrorists make society aware of their cause, so
people become scared of them and push authorities into giving way into their
demands.
