Introduction

• Sustainability has become a mandatory requirement in many

building codes
• In Qatar GSAS Certification is a part of section 7 QCS 2014
• On the other hand in recent days BIM is playing a key role in
design, construction and operation of buildings
• This presentation discusses how BIM can effectively used
deliver sustainability in projects. For more details visit @

What is BIM?

• BIM is an abbreviation of Building Information Model.

• A BIM Model of a building is an intelligent Computer Model

to create, modify, collaborate and coordinate information
throughout the lifecycle of the building ie Design,
Construction and Operations Phase.

• The information stored in the BIM Model plays a key role and
makes it special compared to conventional 2D or 3D

BIM Vs Conventional Model

• It replicates the physical wall • A wall in a conventional

and reflects its properties such model is a box with the given
as materials, finishing, thermal dimensions
properties, structural
properties etc
• Parametric: When
modifications are made in wall,
the change is reflected in all • Non Parametric
associated elements. Example
when the height of wall is
reduced, the roof attached to
wall automatically comes down

What is Building Performance Analysis?

• Building Performance Analysis is done to evaluate the

following during the design stage
– Orientation of the building
– Thermal Performance of the building envelope
– Cooling Load and Heating Load of the building
– Lighting and Daylight
– Impact of shading of adjacent structures
– HVAC system Performance

How BIM makes BPA easier

• Traditionally each element in BPA is done using different tools

but with BIM Model complete Performance Analysis can be
done with a single tool like REVIT

Orientation Analysis

Orientation of the building is evaluated with sun path diagram which in turn
depends of the location of the building.

BIM will the precise coordinates of the building which makes it easier to
perform sun path analysis and hence evaluate various orientations and
architectural features such as shading devices of the building

Thermal Performance of Building
Envelope

BIM Model will have the thermal properties such as

– Thermal Conductivity
– U Value for glazing/Curtain wall
– Shading coffined
– Reflectance
– Absorbvity
of the building envelope elements such as external wall, roof, windows,
curtain walls etc.
The thermal properties along with orientation will be used to evaluate
Thermal performance of the building

Cooling Load and Heating Load
Calculation

All information required to calculate the cooling load or heating load is part of
the BIM model. This includes
– Orientation of the building
– Building envelope properties
– Occupancy details
Hence BIM tools like REVIT can be used instead is using separate tools like
HAP, Trace etc

Lighting & Daylight Simulation

•Traditionally Daylight simulation is done through Autodesk software ecotect

and lighting simulation is done by Dialux or equivalent software.

•With BIM since the glazing properties and luminaire data is a part of the BIM
Model, it can be done using BIM Software such as REVIT

Shading Analysis

Shading Analysis

Shading analysis requires the location of the building and adjacent

structures. Given this information to the model.

BIM Model can be done to perform shading analysis

HVAC System Performance

Generally Energy modeling and simulation software such as eQuest is used

to evaluate various HVAC system types.

Given the HVAC performance details as BIM Model input in addition all the
inputs discussed before.

The model can be used to evaluate HVAC system performance
