Unit IV

SPIRITUAL -MORAL
ASPECTS OF
FAMILY LIFE
Husbands and Wives
What does the Bible say regarding
husbands and wives?

How should they behave toward

each other ?
Husband refers to a male
in a marital relationship.
According to EDBT, It
came from an Old English
word“husbondi/housebond’
’; connecting and keeping
together the whole family.
Wife refers to a
female partner in a
marital relationship
(better half) meaning a
part of husband or his
family.
1. Wives, submit yourselves to your
husbands as to the Lord. For a husband has
authority over his wife just as Christ has
authority over the church. . . And so wives
must submit themselves completely to their
husbands just as church submits itself to
Christ.
2. Husbands, love your wives just
as Christ loved the church and gave his
life for it. . Men ought to love their
wives as they love their own bodies. A
man who loves his wife, loves himself.
No one ever hates his own body. .
Instead he feeds it and takes care of
it. . . As the scripture says, "For this
reason, a man leaves his father and
mother and unite with his wife and
the two will become one."
Sex is present in everyone and
rises to a climax during adolescence.
Sex should not be engaged in with
just anyone. Not only is there
danger of contracting disease, but it
is immoral when done outside of the
marriage bond.
St. Paul advises people to
marry and gives the
following advice:
1. Every man should have his own wife,
and every woman should have her own
husband. A man should fulfill his duty as
a husband, and woman should fulfill her
duty as a wife, and each should satisfy
each other’s needs. .
. . A wife is not the master
of her own body, but her husband is, in
the same way a husband is not the
master of his own body, but his wife is.
2. Do not deny yourselves to each
other, unless you first agree to do so for
a while but then resume to normal
marital relations. In this way you will be
kept from giving in to Satan’s
temptations because of your lack of
self- control.
3. A wife must not leave her
husband; but if she does, she
must remain single or else be
reconciled to her husband, and
a husband, must not divorce
his wife.
St. Paul further advises the husbands:

You must live with your wives with the

proper understanding that they are
weaker sex. Treat them with respect,
because they also will receive, together
with you, God’s gift of life.
Chastity among women is still a price possession.
The Proverbs in the New Testament show the
value of a good wife and mother, as follows:
10. Who can find a virtuous woman? For her
price is far above rubies.

11.The heart of her husband doth safely trust in

her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12. She will do him good and not evil
all the days of her life.

26. She openeth her mouth

with wisdom, and in her
tongue is the law of kindness.
27. She looketh well to the ways
of her household and eateth
not the bread of idleness.

28. Her children arise up and call her

blessed, her husband also, and he
praiseth her.
St. Paul gives the following advice to
wives:
4. . . Teach the young women to be sober,
to love their husbands, to love their children.

5. . . To be discreet, chaste, keepers at

home, good obedient to their own husbands,
that the word of God be not blasphemed.
