CHEMICAL ANALYSIS
CHAPTER 1:
INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL
ANALYSIS
Chapter Outline
1.1 Qualitative versus quantitative analysis
1.2 Analyte and inteferent
1.3 General steps in analytical process
1.3.1 Method selection
1.3.2 Sampling and sample preservation
1.3.3 Sample preparation (homogenizing,
drying, dissolution, dry ashing, wet
digestion)
What is Chemical Analysis?
• Concerned with the chemical characterization
of matter and the answer of two important
questions: what is it (qualitative) and how
much is it (quantitative).
• Important in nearly all aspects of chemistry
e.g agricultural; environmental;
manufacturing etc.
Qualitative vs Quantitative Analysis
Qualitative Quantitative
Reveals the identity of the Indicates the amount of each
elements and compounds in substance in a sample
a sample
e.g. to identify the types of e.g. to determine the
heavy metals in water concentrations (ppb) of Pb in
samples water samples
