Understanding elements of Outage – I
 Ineffective:
 Locos under repair from 00.00 hrs to 00.00 Hrs of any
date.
 Includes all locos under schedule or repair, either
 Atshed or
 Out station.

 10% is the maximum allowed limit.

 Vital in deciding stopping for Major Schedules.
Understanding elements of Outage –II
 Servicing:
 Goods Locos under schedule or repair for any part of
the day.
 In
shed or
 Out station.

 Locos of passenger links.

 Notcovered if link spare not given.
 Covered if link spare is given.
Morning Meeting – Diesel shed
 Presided over by Senior most officer.
 Attended by all section in charges.
 Preferably as early as possible.
 Will give chance for rectification.
 Would not hamper daily out turn.

 Inter sectional issues resolved.

 Scope for manpower manipulation

Shunting & Placement of locos
 All shunting works complete in leisure periods.
 Minimum daily shunting of Locos under
 Major repairs.
 Major schedules.

 Placement keeping in mind

 Repair time.
 Movement of materials.

 Other loco not affected.

Ideal Shed layout
Optimum utilization of Shed layout
 Planned Loco intake in shed.
 Congestion should be avoided.

advance.
 Plan Major schedules for three months.
 Spread all major schedules uniformly.
 Accordingly plan the type of schedules.
 Planned overlaps & skipping.
Prior planning of Schedules
 Co-ordination with power controllers.
 Bringing loco back to shed from line.
 Locos due for major schedule in near future should
not be booked for Goods services.
 Skipping schedule
 Should not be resorted to normally.
Timely planning & decisions
 Clubbing of
 Overdue schedule with next schedule due.
 Major repairs
 Engine block repairs.
 Traction Generator repairs.

 Passenger link locos in lie over.

Forecasting of locos
 Should be
 Wellplanned.
 Done with consent of all concerned.

 Have no scope of failure.

 Timely message to power control.
Health of all locos
 All locos to be maintained in best condition.
 Vital for sheds having less spare locos for
passenger links.
 Increases flexibility.
 Nominations should be done / reviewed based on
loco health.
Phone room
 The most important section related to OUTAGE.
 Should have all the statistical position related to
locos ready all the time.

Improvement in Reliability
 Reliability should be the prime target.
 Follow standard maintenance practices.
 Never take Short cuts.
 Reliability of locos directly affects outage.
 Reliability ↑ Failures ↓ Outage↑
 Reliability ↓ Failures ↑ Outage↓
Strict Adherence to Schedule days
 Quantify man power / Man days involved for every
planned job.
 Fix target for all schedules & non schedule works in
terms of man-days.
 Target should not be allowed to burst in any
condition.
Minor Schedule Attention

 Locos of passenger link normally have integrated

minor schedule timings.
 Minor schedule of Goods locos is counted in
servicing.
 Servicing needs to be minimized to increase outage.
Minimizing Servicing time
 Plan the arrival of schedule locos carefully in co-
ordination with power controllers.
 Minimize waiting time in shed.
 Ensure availability of
 Loco berth at proper location.
 Sufficient staff.
Utilization of Passenger link locos
 Locos available in shed may be offered for Goods
services.
 Minor Schedule of Goods locos done treating it as
a passenger link loco.
 Number of locos in minor schedule (i.e. servicing % )
gets reduced.
Keeping Track of Goods locos
 Goods locos movement is planned instantly.
 Difficult to keep trace.
 Needs to be monitored sincerely.
 If required change direction of movement.
 May reduce the downtime in shed.
 Advance planning if schedule is due.
 Review nomination
Nomination of Goods loco in
passenger link
 The following must be kept in mind
 Wheel diameter.
 Last load box result.

 Lube oil consumption trend.

 Specific fuel oil consumption.

 Major schedule particulars (No overdue )

 Failure trend.
Minimizing Non Schedule Work
 Treat non schedule repairs as potential failures.
 Deal accordingly.
 Do proper analysis.

 Fix up clear responsibility.

 If un-avoidable club with regular schedules.

 Always maintain sufficient spares.
