What are influence lines?
A graphical representation of the variation of a function of a point
in a structure as a force moves across the structure.

How are they useful?

• Denotes the position of the force that will cause worst case
scenario.
• When constructed quantitatively, can be used for design

For statically determinate structures, Ils are made of straight line

segments.

Procedure for Analysis

1. Place a unit load at several points across the structure and find the
resulting function of the IL to be constructed

2. Plot IL graph.

3. Find IL equation : the function in terms of x

Mȕller-Breslau Method
REF: Textbook Chapter 6, 6-3
Mȕller-Breslau Principle:
The IL of a function is the same scale as the deflected shape of the beam
when the beam is subjected to the function.
Procedure for Analysis

1. Remove the constraint of the beam that is to resist the applied function.

2. Apply a positive unit of the function of the IL required.

3. Draw the deflected shape of the beam due to 1 and 2.
