Recap

In the previous session, you have learnt about

Chezy’s equation for flow through open channels

v  c mi

9C304.57 3
Problem -1

The bed slope of a river was found to be 0.000146. If the

hydraulic mean depth is 2.1m and the velocity as
determined by vertical floats is 0.84m/sec, find the value of
Chezy’s constant.

9C304.57 4
Solution
Given

• Bed slope i = 0.000146

• Hydraulic mean depth m = 2.1m

• Velocity V = 0.84 m/sec

9C304.57 5
Solution
• According to Chezy’s formula,

V  C mi

 0.84  c 2.1 0.000146

• C= 47.97

Problem- 2

Find the velocity of flow and rate of flow water through a open
channel of 6 m wide and 3m deep, when it is running full. The
Channel is having bed slope as 1 in 2000. Take Chezy’s
constant C = 55

9C304.57 7 7
Given data

Width of rectangular channel (b) =6m

Depth of Channel (d) = 3m
Bed slope (i) = 1 in 2000 = 1/2000
Chezy’s Constant C = 55

9C304.57 8 8
Solution

Area A = b X d

= 6 X 3 = 18 sq.m

Perimeter P = b+ 2d

= 6+ 2x3

= 12m

9C304.57 9 9
Using equation m = A/P

= 18/12 = 1.5 m

V  C mi
V  55 1.5  1 / 2000

V = 1.506 m/sec

9C304.57 10
Discharge Q = V X A
=1.506 * 18
Discharge Q =27.108 m3/sec
