How does Civil Engineering use Trigonometry?
Civil Engineering is a professional occupation involving the design,
construction and maintenance of the naturally and physically built
environment. (Bridges, dams, roads, tunnels, and buildings). Civil
Engineering has been around since the beginnings of human
existence, it may have commenced around 2000 to 4000 BC in
Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
X-ray Crystallography is a scientific
method used to determine the
arrangement of atoms of a crystalline
solid in three dimensional space. This
technique takes advantage of the
interatomic spacing of most
crystalline solids by employing them
as a diffraction gradient for x-ray light,
which has wavelengths on the order of
1 angstrom (10-8 cm).

Trigonometry in Electrical Engineering
Electrical Engineering covers a wide variety of
research, design and product development activities.
Initial designs and concepts are almost always done
with computer modeling (or on paper) using a
mathematical representation of the problem. It is very
common for trigonometry to be involved. Specialized
computer software can stream-line the design process
but there is no escaping the need to thoroughly
understand the math concepts.
For instance, basic circuit elements are modeled
geometrically using x and y coordinates. Resistive and
reactive values are plotted as right triangles. All
standard trigonometric functions (and their inverses)
are very useful in designing and analyzing circuits.
The electronic engineering is the set of technical,
both theoretical and practical knowledge that take
as an lens the application of the electronic
technology for the resolution of practical problems.

Trigonometric Applications to the Physical
Sciences
What are the physical sciences?
The study of inanimate objects and
ideas
Includes physics, chemistry, and
astronomy
Origins of Trigonometry
Trigonometry was invented thousands of
years ago to be used to make
calculations in astronomy.
Trigonometry functions to find measures,
particularly those in triangles. It deals
with the relationships between the sides
and the angles of the triangles.
Spherical trigonometry studies the
triangles on the surface of spheres
Trigonometry in Medical Imaging
MRI
How does it work?
Magnetic field aligns protons inside of
hydrogen atoms
Bursts of radio waves are sent from the
scanner into body
Knock protons from their position
STOP -> protons realign back into place
(emit signals)
Signals are detected by a receiving
device in the scanner
Receiving device transmits the signals to
a computer
Creates a picture based on radio signals
Trigonometry is used solve
several problems in analytic
number theory. They investigate
trigonometric integrals, which are
often encountered in physics,
mathematical statistics, and
analysis, and in addition they
present purely arithmetic results
concerning the solvability of
equations in integers.
Oceanographers use trigonometric
ratios to calculate distances
Ex. - Tracking a sea creature; must
calculate how far away it is
Fun Problems Yay
1) Nemo decides he's going to swim
to the "butt". There are 6 wave crests
at that moment between Nemo and
the butt. The equation of these
waves, in terms of feet is : y=2sin(πx).
His friend is directly under the butt
and wants to swim back and stop
him, and the angle of depression
from Nemo to his friend is 42°.
a) How far is Nemo from his friend?
Trigonometry and Seismology

Trigonometry: the branch of mathematics

dealing with the relations of the sides and
angles of triangles and with the relevant
functions of any angles.
Seismology: a branch of science concerned
with earthquakes and related phenomena
Trig in Seismology
Used to detect the epicenters of a
earthquake
3 seismographs cord a reading for how long it
took the p then s waves to get there and how
strong they are
Visual perception is
the ability to interpret
the surrounding
environment by
processing
information that is
contained in visible
light. The resulting
perception is also
known as eyesight,
sight, or vision
