What is INTERNET?
 A global system of interconnected computer
networks using TCP/IP to serve users.
 The origins of the Internet reach back to the 1960s

when the United States funded research projects of

its military agencies to build robust, fault-tolerant
and distributed computer networks.
 Traditional communications media, such as
telephone and television services, are reshaped
using the Internet, giving rise to Voice over Internet
Protocol (VoIP) and IPTV.
Services provided by internet
 Information
 Communication

 Data transfer
Accessibility
 Dial-up,
 Landline broadband (over coaxial cable, fibre optic

or copper wires),
 Wi-Fi,

 Satellite

 3G technology cell phones.

Broadband
 High speed data download - 256 kbps to 2 Mbps
 ”Always on Internet” Connection
 Static IP on demand by customer.
 IPTV- Multicast Video Services, Video-on-demand
etc
 Can share Broadband connection to create own LAN
network i.e. more than one PC can be connected.
 VoIP

BROADBAND NETWORK
 The BBRAS are Connected to the Tier 1 (T1) switch
using a Multimode Fiber and this Connectivity do
carry the Entire Traffic from a downstream T2
switches
 All of the T1 switches are linked to the T2 using the
single mode fiber and appropriate Module Based on
the Distance between each of the location
 The T2 Switch would be Linked to the nearest
DSLAM which would be located at wire centers
Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Loop
 ADSL supports down-stream rates much higher than
up-stream

 Very attractive choice for internet service

 Multiple services like voice, video and data are

supported

 The ADSL technology consists, a set of office-end

equipment called DSLAM at the central office (CO)
and a set of Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) at
the user end
ADSL NETWORK COMPONENTS
ADSL MODEM
DSLAM
BRAS
ADSL MODEM
 The ADSL modem at the customer premises,
that is called an ADSL Transceiver Unit-
Remote (ATU-R). It provides local loop
termination on the customer side.
 Local Loop wires from a customer to the

telephone company's central office.

 Converts analog electrical signals to data

traffic (upstream traffic for data upload) and

data traffic to analog electrical signals
(downstream for data download).
DSLAM FUNCTIONS
Aggregates the output from ADSL lines
DSLAM is a multiplexing technology that is
used for multiplexing several users onto a
higher speed link
Enforces quality of service (QoS) policies
Routes or Bridges data traffic towards
backbone network
Benefits of ADSL
Can talk on the phone and use the
Internet at the same time
Can connect to Internet at up to 140
times faster than analog Modems
Connection to the Internet is “always on”
Home has its own dedicated connection
Connection is highly Reliable and Secure
Faster digital downloads
Faster and better multimedia

INTRODUCTION TO ADSL 12
Benefits to MTNL customers
 IPTV and Gaming services are available.
 More than one PC (LAN) connectivity available.
 No telephone call charges for Internet Access.
 Inexpensive - Tariffs at extremely affordable
rates.
 Services based on Use Now and Pay Later
model.
 Charges to be billed along with normal
telephone bill.
 Registration through Call-Center, CSC and
through MTNL web site.

IPTV
TV distribution technologies
 Traditional TV distribution technologies
 Terrestrial
 Satellite and
 Cable.

 IPTV
IPTV
 IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a system where a
digital television service is delivered by using Internet
protocol over a network infrastructure, which may
include delivery by a broadband connection.
 Cable television and satellite operators broadcast a
large selection of channels at the same time, which
requires the use of a tuner to select a desired channel.
 IPTV can be considered to represent an on-demand
service.

IP TV Service Features
IPTV covers - Live TV ( Multicasting ) and -
Stored video (Video on Demand).
TV service which is delivered using IP technology, which
is the same technology used in Internet Services.
The TV channels are encoded in IP format and delivered
to TV using a Set Top Box.
The Video on Demand ( VOD) Service is similar to
watching Video CD's / DVD's using a VCD / DVD player
Interactivity
 Interactive program guide that allows viewers to search
for content by title.
 A picture-in-picture functionality that allows them to
“channel surf” without leaving the program they’re
watching.
 To look up a player’s stats while watching a sports
game, or control the camera angle.
 Parental controls so their child can watch a documentary
for a school report, while they’re away from home.
Set Top Box
 Set-top box (STB) converts analog or digital
signal (channels) into the television format
suitable for being displayed on TV screen.
 Set-top box connects a TV set to some
external source of signal ( ADSL router).

 TV Set connected to STB with Audio Video or

S- Video cable.
