Conceptual Definition

Communication Technology:
Refer to the physical means of connecting one location to
another for the purpose of transmitting information
(Encyclopedia of Information and Library Science, 1993, Vol.5, 1535p.)

 Information Network:
The geographically resource centers, including information processors
and terminal which get interconnected using data communication facilities.
(Encyclopedia of Information and Library Science, 1993, Vol.5, 1535p.)

 Information Technology:
The electric technology which used for Data collecting, Storing,
processing and communication. This consist in two section
 1. Data processing things like Computer system
 2. Information transferring things like telecommunication system

combination of these two, we call information Technology

(The Penguin Dictionary of Information Technology, 1994, 150p.)
 ICT :
The combination of Information technology and
communication technology which can provide service to
human and organization (Doyle, 2001)

 SLSTINET - Sri Lanka Scientific and Technical

Information Network
 AGRINET - Agriculture Information Network
 HELLIS - The Health Science Library Literature
and Information System
Back ground
This research is attempts to measure the
impact of information communication
technology for cooperative activities of
information networks among science and
technology information networks in Sri Lanka
Problem Statement
 Does Information communication
technology used in Science and
Technology Information Network in Sri
Lanka.
Aim of the Study
 To find out whether they use ICT to do their
cooperative activities and information exchange
 To identify the methods of information
communication technology used in information
networks
 To identify the difficulties and problems by using
ICT for network activities
 To identify the reasons that not to use ICT in
Information networks
Population and Sample
Main Population Sample Sample as a
Networks Scale percentage
HELLIS 19 12 63.16
AGRINET 30 25 83.33
SLSTINET 120 60 50
169 97
Methodology

 Questionnaires (Structured Type)

 Structured Interview
Data Analysis
 Quantitative & Qualitative analyzing methods

 Calculating mode, mean and representation of

percentage values

 Tables and Diagrams

Conclusion
 Can’t be seen widely used (ICT)

 Can be seen in some house keeping

function (computerized catalogue, data
base, internet searching, CD Rom
searching)

 Can be seen in some cooperative

activities (Union Catalogue, CAS,ULIST )
 Lack of software and hardware facilities,

 Lack of allocating financial provisions

 Lack of attention of mother organization

 Lack of technical training staff

Suggestions
 Providing ICT training by focal point

 Organizing IT and library software workshop

 Develop the cooperation among member

libraries

 Recruiting ICT staff
