What is immigration?
Immigration is when there is a permanent
movement of individuals or groups across
symbolic or political boundaries into new
residential areas or communities
The importance of immigration
Immigration is important because it
benefits the U.S. just as much as the rest
of the citizens. They help build a stronger
economy and also help build culture in the
U.S.

Increased immigration in the United States has increased the earnings of
Americans with more than a high school degree.

What is DACA?
DACA means Deferred Action of Childhood
Arrivals and it allowed people who
entered the country illegally to get a two
year renewable period of deferred action
from deportation and be eligible for a
work permit.
Benefits of DACA
● DREAMers can get a work permit
● DREAMers can buy a car, get credit &
debit cards
● Since DACA, more DREAMers have
attended school

Forced Deportations
There have been more deportations under
Obama administration, but more arrests
under Trump administration.
Ex: Day Without Immigrants
Protest and boycott that took place on February 16, 2017, to
demonstrate the importance of immigration, and to protest
President Donald Trump's plans to build a border wall. It gave
a taste of how immigrants significantly impact the workforce,
and how much we rely on them.
Supreme Court Case: Plyler v. Doe (1982)
In 1975, the Texas Legislature authorized local school
districts to deny enrollment in public schools to
foreign-born children who were not “legally admitted”
to the United States.
Decision: On advice from his lawyer, he entered a

guilty plea with respect to the three drug charges

in exchange for dismissal on the final charge.


Deportation Case #1
Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos had been
going to her immigration check-in since
her 2008 arrest for conviction of fake
social security number. After, she was able
to just go in to check-in
but this time it was different.

What is a Sanctuary City?
A sanctuary is a place where anyone is welcome
and is a place of refuge or safety. A sanctuary
city is a city that limits its cooperation with the
national government effort to enforce
immigration law.

FUN FACT: Sanctuary cities see 15% less


crime than non-sanctuary cities.

Supreme Court Case: Padilla v. Kentucky
(2010)
Joey Padilla was indicted by a Kentucky grand
jury on counts of trafficking in marijuana,
possession of marijuana, possession of drug
paraphernalia, and operating a tractor/trailer
without a weight and distance tax number. On
advice from his lawyer, he entered a guilty plea
with respect to the three drug charges in
exchange for dismissal on the final charge.
