WHAT IS RESPONSE TO
INTERVENTION(RTI)?
• Response to Intervention(RTI) is a multi-tiered approach that meets the needs of students in
the areas of Academic and Behavior.
• Teachers are encouraged to utilize differentiated, research based strategies and small group
instruction that vary how content is taught to students in Tiers 2 and 3 with different learning
styles.
• It helps to build capacity within the learning environment among teachers and students.
• Teachers will know how to effectively document strategies in the case student are referred for
a 504 or Individualized Education Plan.
HOW STUDENTS LEARN…

• Each student learns and processes information differently. When information is presented in
various ways, it will ensure the success of ALL students. There are three different ways student
process information:
• Visual-students learn best when the are able to see information such as being written, with
visuals and/or events.
• Auditory-students learn best in this method when they are able to talk about and listen to the
content that is being taught. They understand best when information is presented orally.
• Tactile/Kinesthetic-students learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning. These
student learn best by doing!!
EXAMPLES OF TIER 2 AND TIER 3
ACADEMIC STRATEGIES
• TIER 2 EXAMPLES:
• Break assignments into smaller chunks to give students opportunities to respond frequently
• Utilize technology and other software to access content in multiple ways
• Use graphic organizers to focus on key concepts and ideas
• Increase the use of visuals such as anchor charts, and other models
• Continuously monitor student understanding
• Utilize frequent progress monitoring to ensure instruction is adjusted in a timely manner
• Increase opportunities for students to respond in various ways (i.e. class room DOJO if available, asking
questions, using dry erase boards, thumbs up)
• Incorporate high interest cues such as songs, images, rhymes, movements, etc.
EXAMPLES OF TIER 2 AND TIER 3
ACADEMIC STRATEGIES
• TIER 3 EXAMPLES:
• Utilize direct instruction
• Use multiple sensory techniques
• Extend time when needed to ensure students understand learning concepts
• Provide frequent breaks and movements for student who are kinesthetic learners
• MEET WITH THIS GROUP DAILY TO PROVIDE TARGETED INSTRUCTION TO THE SKILL
DEFICITS!!!
• Break instruction into segments to provide instruction at each step.
• Repetition is mastery, provide students with plenty of opportunities for students to learn i.e. oral, written,
and acting it out.
THE TEACHER AND THE LEARNING
ENVIRONMENT
• Best practices indicate that when a teacher is knowledgeable of how to vary teaching
techniques and adapt instruction to meet the needs of her students there will be favorable
outcomes of learning.
• Examples of Best Practices:
– Know your students and how they learn best.
– Show your student ENTHUSIAM to keep their attention.
– Understand that some content that you teach will require you to go above and beyond preferred
learning styles of student. You may have to utilize one or more modalities in order for students to
understand the content.
EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTIONAL
PRACTICES…
• When teachers implement strategies that are research based, it will lead to better learning
outcomes for our students. Some examples of effective instructional practice include:
• Feedback
• Games and Simulations
• Cooperative Grouping
• Independent Practice a.k.a Homework
• Questions
• Graphic Organizers
• ***Please see handouts related to these practices***
