Active and Passive

Active : Some people built this museum in 1895.
Passive : This museum was built in 1895.

Active : The National Anthem, ‘INDONESIA RAYA’. I request

audience to stand up.
Passive : The National Anthem, ‘INDONESIA RAYA’. Audience
is requested to stand up.

Pattern : S + tobe + V3 + (by ‘agent’)

Note : 1) Subject of Passive is from Object of Active.

2) To be must be adapted with S and Tense.
3) V3 – Regular and Irregular Verbs
4) By ‘agent’ sometimes exists, but sometimes not.
 Passive Voice in Some Tenses

• Simple Present : S + am/is/are + V3

• Simple Past : was/ were
• Simple Future : will be (modals)
• ………Continuous : (to be) being
• ………Perfect : (has/have/had) been
 Examples :
1. A : I presented this article in the regional workshop
on March 20, 2012 in Amikom University.
P : This article was presented in the regional
workshop on March 20,2012 in Amikom University.
2. A : They aren’t building a new hospital at the
moment.
P : A new hospital isn’t being built at the moment.
3. A : HasTom delivered the goods to CV.Zen?
P : Has the goods been delivered by Tom to CV.Zen?
4. A : Riri Rizal will make the new film next month.
P : The new film will be made by Riri Rizal next
month.
 EXERCISE :
Complete the sentence with one appropriate word
in the correct form!
