Social action :
Social action is a way of meeting mass social problems . Social
action means taking steps to change the things that are wrong in
our society and introducing new ideas and processes for doing
things better in future . It could be briefly defined as mass attack
on mass social problems .
Social action covers movements of political reforms, industrial democracy,
social legislation, racial and social justice, religious freedom and civic liberty .
 According to Baldin (1966) :
“ An organized effort to change social and economic institutions .”
 According to Walter Friedlander :
“ Social action is an individual, group or community effort which aims to
bring changes in social legislation and welfare services . “
Leadership :
Leadership is the exercise of influence of power in social groups and
activities. It is the activity of person to take decision and give direction to
other people for achieving a particular objectives or goal . It is a quality
found in the individual . It is the winning of confidence of the mass people
and acting to their behalf .
According to laPierre :
“leadership is a behaviours that affects the behaviours of people more
than their behaviours affects that of the leaders .”
According to Allen :
“leadership is the activity of persuading people to cooperate in the
achievement of common objective .”
Roles Of Leader In Social Action :
Human beings are social animals and living together in a large groups naturally
meant that people needed to adopt different roles and accomplish different
groups . In order to give structure to society and help society grow and
develop, people are naturally divided into leaders and followers . Leadership is
instrumental to achieving social change .
Roles of leader in social action are mention below :
Initiator : call attention to the issues, help the clients community to
organized etc .
Mediator : should listen to both parties, should identify confusion,
differences and miscommunication, should act neutrally etc .
Organizer : organize the client, link organization with others, serve as
facilitator, consultant advisor etc .

 Negotiator : construct win-win approach, need techniques of advocate ,more
claim rather than emotionally involved etc .
 Spokesperson : present the organization views, deliver ideas of problem
solving process on behalf of change etc .
 Advocate : raise voice on behalf of weaker section of society, document the
issue, fight for the rights of others etc .
 Educator : involved in teaching, how to develop particular skills ? Etc .
 Case manager : involved in locating services and assisting their clients to
access those service, important for complex situation : health issue,
disabled, homeless etc .
 Facilitator : involved in gathering groups of people together for variety of
purpose .

 Counselor : improving social functioning, articulate their needs, clearify
theirs problems etc .
 Broker : responsible for identifying, locating and linking client system to
needed resourses in a timely fashion, assists the client in choosing the most
appropriate service option .
 Researcher : evaluates practice interventions and with others evaluates
program output, seeks to enhance the effectiveness of social work practice .
