THE DEVELOPMENT OF

THE HEART
Assoc Prof dr Hamiadji Tanuseputro

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy

rots the bones.
LECTURE OUTLINE
• TUBULAR HEART
• DEVELOPMENT OF SINUS VENOSUS
• DEVELOPMENT OF ATRIA
• DEVELOPMENT OF VENTRICLES
• DEVELOPMENT OF BULBUS AND TRUNCUS
ARTERIOSUS
• DEVELOPMENT OF GREAT VESSELS
• FOETAL CIRCULATION
DEVELOPMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

The origins of the heart tube are

clusters of angiogenic cells which are
located in the cardiogenic plate.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE HEART
• Angiogenetic cell clusters blood vessels + blood
(Angioblastic tissue) (18th day)
(Island of Wolff & Pander)

• Endocardial tubes tubular heart

(20th day)

• Tubular heart begins to beat

(22nd day)

• Dilatations of the tube sinus venosus

common atrium
common ventricle
bulbus cordis
truncus arteriosus

• Folding of the tube endocardium

(cardiac jelly)
myoepicardial mantle

• Partitioning begins (24th day)

• Partitioning ends (42nd day)

THE TUBULAR HEART

The newly formed heart tube bulges

into the pericardial cavity and is
attached to the dorsal wall by a fold
of tissue, the dorsal mesoderm. This
is a derivative of foregut
splanchnopleuric mesoderm
THE TUBULAR HEART
THE TUBULAR HEART

Arterial pole

Venous pole

As it bulges into the cavity it becomes

invested in a layer of myocardium. A
layer of acellular matrix, the cardiac
jelly, separates the myocardium and
the endothelial heart tube.

Dorsal myocardium is
breaking down
DEVELOPMENT OF THE SINUS VENOSUS
Unlike the atria, the sinus vinosus
remains a paired structure with right
and left horns. Each horn receives
venous blood from three vessels:
1. Vitelline vein
2. Umbilical vein
3. Common cardinal vein
DEVELOPMENT OF THE ATRIA

Unlike the septum primum, septum secundum

does not fuse with the endocardial cushions. Its
free edge forms the foramen ovale.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE VENTRICLES

The interventricular septum

develops from 3 components:
1.Endocardial cushions
2.Interventricular septum
3.Bulber ridges
DEVELOPMENT OF THE VENTRICLES
DEVELOPMENT OF TRUNCUS ARTERIOSUS
DEVELOPMENT OF TRUNCUS ARTERIOSUS
THE AORTIC ARCHES
FOETAL CIRCULATION

Changes after birth:

-1. Baby cries – lungs expanding –
inflow of blood
-2. Blood pressure in left atrium
increased – foramen ovale closed
-3. Ductus arteriosus closed – lig.
arteriosum
-4. Umbilical cord cut – dt. vesosus – lig
venosum
