Digital animation

Raster animation
• A Raster images or a bitap is a “dot matrix data structure” usually showing a grid of rectangular pixels.
• Compression is the reduction of using less information than the original piece in order for it to fit into smaller file. When a image is
compressed usually a little information is lost meaning the quality of the image may not be as good as the original.
• Compression can either be lossy or lossless. Lossless is the reduction of statistical redundancy by identifying and eliminating, no
information is lost in lossless. Lossy usually has a disadvantage of the image loosing its quality as lossy eliminates the information
that is less important or unnecessary.
• Raster images take different formats some examples are:
• GIF- Graphic interchange format (GIF) is a format for image files that support both animated and static images. GIF’s are used over
the internet for advertisement.
• TIFF – tagged image format (TIFF). This is a format that allows you to store grey scale data. TIFF is a format used to exchange raster
images between application programs.
• JPG – joint photographic experts group (JPG). JPGcan store more colours than a GIF but this can be a disadvantage as quality of the
image can be lost. The internet usually uses JPG for its images.
• BMP- best management practices is a image file format that is usually used to store bitmap images.
• PSD- is used for photoshop as it is a photoshop image file. PSDis made up of layers that are connected together.
Vector animation
• Vector images are images created through commands or mathematical statements that then create lines or shapes in a two dimensional or
three dimensional space. The advantage of using a vector image is that it uses a small file as the creation is saved as a sequence of vector
statements. Another advantage is that a image can be blown up to a bigger size and it will not loose its quality.
• vector images are made of paths, paths use points, angles and curves. Paths like lines, squares, triangles or curves can be used to create a
simple image.
• Vector images can use;
• File extensions like encapsulated postscript (EPS) adobe illustrator (AI) flash application (FLA) and scalable vector graphics (SVG) are all
usually used for more animation/cartoon like images.
• EPS- is usually used to contain text, graphics etc. usually a bitmap version of the image for simpler viewing. EPS files are mainly self
contained. EPS is the most popular file format.
• FLA- flash application is used on flash which is used for videos and adding information. FLA is a pressed file format and can be viewed on the
web.
Compression, file size and download speeds
Compression
Compression is popular within computers. It is when you reduce the size of file for it to not take up too much file space. The number of bits
within the file will be condensed into a smaller file which then results in the file being loaded quicker and the file size being reduced.
Compression can also be used within text by taking away all the unnecessary characters “inserting a single repeat character to indicate a string
of repeated characters and substituting a smaller bit string for a frequently occurring bit string.” By compressing a text file, it could compress
the size by to 50%.
File size
Originally, “streamed” audio and video were delivered to a viewer over HTTP much like other website content such as images (this method is
often called HTTP Streaming). The video would be downloaded to a computer then saved temporarily on a hard drive. As I am uploading the
advert to YouTube I will need to make sure that the file is the correct size according to the YouTube guidelines. The current standards to upload
a video to YouTube is ‘2 GB for uploads from YouTube web page, and to 20 GB if Java-based Advanced Uploader is used.” Some file formats are
designed for very particular types of data: PNG files, for example, store bitmapped images using lossless data compression.
Download speeds
Fast broadband is defined as speeds of 10 megabits per second (Mbps) or faster. Although the average connection speed declined nearly 10
percent quarter-over-quarter, Delaware, at 10.9 Mbps, reigns supreme as the state with the highest average connection speed.
When a file is downloaded the whole entire file will be saved onto the computer used to do so. This will be typically saved onto a temporary
folder, where the user can open up the file and view the content. One of the advantages of downloading is that the user has quicker access to
many different parts of the file. One of the largest disadvantages is that the user will have to wait for the file to download onto the computer
they are suing and this can take a very long time. It all depends on the size of the file, a smaller file will not take too long to download however
a lager file can take a lot longer sometimes even hours which can be very inconvenient.
File formats
Digital Video File Formats – Videos all have a variety of different file formats. This is very important as not all devices can play all sorts of
format of video, sometimes it can also show how good the quality of the video will be before even seeing it on the output device.
Here are some of the digital video file formats:
• swf - Shockwave Flash functions (swf) is the dominant format for displaying "animated" vector graphics on the internet. SWF may also be
used for programs for things like browser games which uses Action Script. SWF files can be used from within multiple Adobe products:
Flash, Flash Builder (an IDE), MCMLC and after effects. The term "SWF" has originated as an abbreviation for ShockWave Flash. “SWF files
can contain animations or applets of varying degrees of interactivity and function”. They may also occur in programs mainly browser games,
using ActionScript.
• flv - Flash Video (flv) is known as a container file format which is used to deliver video over the Internet by using the versions 6-10 of adobe
flash player. Both formats are supported in Adobe Flash Player are being developed by Adobe Systems currently. FLV was originally created
by Macromedia.

Flash Video is used to deliver digital video content like TV shows, movies, etc over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player version 6 and newer.
Flash Video content may also be embedded within SWF files. There are two different video file formats known as Flash Video: FLV and F4V.
Conclusion
• In conclusion I have found that animation can include vector or raster animation and this is also known as bitmap. Vector
images are created using vectors and raster images are created by using pixels. Raster images are like Gifs and jpeg and are
a collection of pixels that are created by a number of different colours which will then form a image. Vector graphics such
as eps files are made up differently and they are made up from paths and lines. For a vector image the data file includes all
of its points where the paths have started and ended.
• When a person wants to use a animation of the internet, the animation may need to be compressed as the file may be too
big. If the file is too big the download speed will slower. To compress either a lossy or lossless file can be used, lossy takes
the data out and lossless rewrites the file.
