NON TRADITIONAL MACHINING

Non Traditional Machining process is defined as a group

of process that removes excess material by various
techniques involving mechanical, thermal, electrical or
chemical energy or combination of these energies but do
not use a sharp cutting tools as it needs to be used for
traditional manufacturing process.
ABRASIVE JET MACHINING

Abrasive Jet Machine is a process in which excess

material is removed from the work piece due to
impingement of fine grain abrasive by a high
velocity gas stream.
ABRASIVE JET MACHINE PRINCIPLE

Abrasive jet machine is the removal of

material from a work piece by the application
of high stream of a abrasive particles carried in
gas medium from the nozzle.

Variables in AJM
The variables that influences the rate of metal
removal and accuracy of machining in this process
are:
1. Carrier gas
2. Type of abrasive
3. Size of abrasive grain
4. Velocity of the abrasive jet
5. Mean number of abrasive particles per unit volume
of the carrier gas
6. Work material
7. Stand off
8. Nozzle design
9. Shape of cut

ADVANTAGES

 Surface finish obtained is high.

 Capital cost is low.
 It cut a hole of intricate shapes in hard and
brittle materials.
 Depth of surface damage is low
DISADVANTAGES

 Low material removal rate.

 The process produces a tapered cut.
 Nozzle life is limited.
 Nozzle wear is high.
APPLICATIONS

 Used for cleaning the spark plug and casting.

 Used for removal of glue and paints.
 Used to machine thin sections and intricate
shapes in hard and brittle materials.
 Used to producing high qualities surfaces.
 Removing flash and parting line from injection
moulded parts
 Cutting thin sectioned fragile components made
of glass, refractories, ceramics, mica etc.
