OVERALL REFLECTION ON TEACHING PE

 My overall experience in 102072 Primary Physical Education has been an overwhelmingly positive one. I believe that through the
practical skill based tutorials I was able to network, collaborate and learn from fellow future teachers. For example, when completing
fundamental movement drills on the basketball court and on the oval I was able to observe other teacher’s strategies on how they
approach a game, lead a micro lesson or generally coached fellow students. I feel the ability to experience PE from a learning perspective
has been very refreshing. Prior to commencing this unit I took my personal fundamental movement skills for granted. I now have been
able to reflect on and consider at which stage of my primary, secondary or adult learning I have developed and mastered these skills.
 I also believe that the learning activities of this unit directly related to the unit content explicitly. For example, practising warm up drills,
game sense approach and invasions games, court based invasion games, collaborative learning through games, the study of indigenous
games and micro teaching lessons were all supported by theories in the lectures. At the beginning of the unit the class theory looked at
overall health of the Australian population in regards to the high mortality of Australians due to the lack of physical activities. There was a
guest lecturer in week 5 who discussed what her team were doing in regards to working on a state level with government schools on
insuring that every canteen in the state is offering young students heathy, appetising options in the canteen. As a future teacher or PE, it is
vital that I allow my future students to be physically active as possible.
 Moving forward I feel passionate and inspired to working with young students in primary school. For example to help develop them
with their physical education. In regards to professional development last year on my PP1 placement there was a professional
development course on coaching AusTag in schools. I feel this training is something that I will complete in the next 12 months as I enjoy
playing AusTag during primary and high school and as a young professional when I first began working in an office job and I would like to
continue to teach fundamental movements skills through AusTag.
OVERALL REFLECTION ON TEACHING PDH
 My overall experience in 102072 Primary Personal Development and Health has also been an overwhelmingly positive one. I feel the unit
has been able to cover Personal Development and Health in a holistic manner. For example, over the unit I have learnt how to manage
school cyber bullying, topic such as diverse sexualities in primary years, working with students with additional needs . I was also made
aware of research that links preservice teachers body image, and confidence to their level of confidence when it comes to teaching sport
in primary schools. I learnt that a preservice teacher’s prior concepts of body education will have a direct impact on their future teaching
pedagogies.
 I also believe that the learning activities of this unit directly related to the unit content explicitly. For example, in my first PDH tutorial,
my tutorial class were asked to consider their personal experiences of sports in the primary years, how they would teach a fundamental
movement skill to a student, speak to parents regarding a sensitive issue raised in the class by a student. Overall I feel that I need to be
more aware of existing state government policies, teacher’s PDH resources when it comes to teaching PDH. For example, since
commencing the unit gay marriage has been legalised in Australia (something that was discussed in a tutorial) therefore students need to
be properly educated on issues such as this. I think as a future teacher it is a duty of care to ensure students are given the correct
information. This includes being 100% unbiased.
 Moving forward I feel passionate and inspired that I will be in a privileged position to educate students on all facets in personal health
and development. I am looking forward to assisting future students have a better understanding of their bodies, minds, health and social-
emotional needs. This unit has taught me that the subject of personal health and development is a complex one, however there are
fantastic resources available especially from the New South Wales govern to support young students with their education in PDH. In
addition, I have recently completed a professional development course in PDH at the University of Wollongong on ‘ Social Emotional
Learning, Anxiety, Behaviour and the Autism Spectrum’ that will assist me in my role as a teacher’s aide at an independent school with
students on the ASD spectrum.
