Research and Development
• I usually always create title pages for projects and mood boards to show my direction
for a collection of work that links together via seasons, for customers and for fashion.
However due to the internet and online site Pinterest I have been archiving visuals.

Key Design Points
• Juxtaposing images to create a bohemian luxury
• Looking at how classic traditional methods can be mixed in an opulent visual method by
keeping strictly inside classic values of visual theology and natures ambience

• Problematic problems to over come will be developing key skills in digital technologies
• Become more competent using photoshop, illustrator, InDesign and CAD for different
processes.
• Keeping a design in an area of longevity without it loosing importance for the consumer.
• Making something too modern without vintage nostalgic references will shorten its
importance, it’s live span will become short lived.
• Finding a layout process and finish that can travel through seasons and products within
different colourways and themes in order to create a new interpretation of the world around
us.
Historical Influences/Research
Why does popular culture hold a kinship with artisan
crafts and what are the theories that link?

My research has taken me to William Morris , his printing company and his house
the Red House. I will be comparing todays contemporary design influences with
the late 19th century and respond to how popular culture holds a kinship of artisan
craft inspiration whether it is hand made or mass produced.

What are the evoking responses to rustic charm, warn out, weathered, patinaed
effects that creates certain equity based responses i.e charm, nostalgic, homely,
earthy values?

William Morris wrote that art is mans expression of his joy of labour, an expression
that the industrial revolution has removed.

One of my enquiring questions is to research the need for a handmade

humanized approach to designing and why this process is a contemporary design
inspiration for many designers. I will be comparing and researching the values of
the arts and craft movement with contemporary approaches to design theories.

Design Theory,

• Researching theoretical basis of design and analysing
contemporary issues relating to a cohesive approach
and deeper understanding of traditional and
contemporary technologies and finding a balance
between traditional humanized artisan craft and
modern production processes.
• I can do this by researching historical design theory and
finding links with modern artist/design theory and

• I can do this by looking into contemporary and classic
techniques and finding integration.

• These images represent my current contemporary
influences. In order to evoke contemporary it is
important to focus on current trends which have the
responses of traditionalist values mixing contemporary
with traditional effects imagery.
• My work has to have longevity in order for the values of
sustainability to be added to the consumers desires for
a more sustainable eco valued lifestyles that modern
day society endears towards.
Aims and
Objectives
• The enquiring for my project is to look at the
methods of print inside of digital and
traditional processes,
• Therefore my project brief is looking deeply
into the processes that evoke the questioning
for my design practice.
• I am looking at achieving an integration
between traditional and IT technologies
• Bridging the gap between the two and
adding warmth through rustic patinaed
effects for the viewer/client/audience.

Developments
• I have been using an image created via
a cannon camera with high pixilation
and a micro lens to create different
images looking inside of different
techniques and the effects these
techniques create. Using one image
makes it easier to see the design values
and choices and in turn effects and

Processes IT
• Tradition Practices versus digital
contemporary processes are key to
my MA Design Brief
• Values of imperfection, homespun
versus the industrial
revolution/machine made precision.
• My priority of design choices are
:Colour is the main initial focus of my
design practice and second is
Patternation and 3rd is theme within
design direction for a particular
season/clientele/product area.
• I have previously ran a handcrafted
knitwear company and I am aiming
to reflect this in my project.
Integration: Innovations
• The reason for this integration is for me to move away from actual
product making and work on traditional methods that then can
be translated into illustrator /photoshop/in design, in order to
freelance design.
• The integration however is also the design development process
to evoke new uniqueness in design direction. Looking closely at
the limitations and options available within each application.
• Creating a cohesive approach with traditional and
contemporary IT images to create a new design practice.
• Adding opulence to evoke a sumptuous visual lifestyle choices
which links directly towards classic traditional cultural values for
consumers and viewers to appreciate.
• My area of choice is print making for home, adding elements of
decoration using hardware ie small metal castings and laser
cutting objects de-art embellishment.(this area could be photo
images also)
