USAGE OF EDUCATIONAL

COURSEWARE ABLE TO
IMPROVE STUDENTS
ACHIEVEMENT IN
‘MATHEMATICS YEAR 5-
ROUNDING OFF NUMBERS’
IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS
Abstract :
•To identify the factors that encourage
mathematics teachers use educational
software and outcome or achievement of
students.

•The instrument used during this study


consisting of pretest and post-test.

•The use of computer animation can


facilitate students repeat assignment several
times so that students can understand the
concept of rounding off numbers.
Research Background

•The usage of multimedia was able to develop the


potential of students optimally and make teaching
and learning more effective.

•Courseware built and supplied by the ministry was


presented in various forms of media, text, sound,
images, graphics and animation.

•Teaching and learning using multimedia elements


are able to act as an interactive tool to trigger
cognitive learning processes, critical and creative
thinking and also problem solving.
Objective of Research

•To determine the effectiveness of using educational


software to rounding off number and students’
interest toward the lesson.

•To determine the effectiveness of using educational


software to rounding off number and students’
achievement in the lesson.
Research Aim

•Diversifying the learning of mathematics for title


"Rounding off numbers".

•To strengthen students' understanding of


numbers.

•Enable students to perform learning and self-


assessment through practice questions at the end
of the lesson.
LITERATURE REVIEW
•Multimedia is a new technology that can provide many
benefits to the development of education- D'Lgnazio
(Ismail Zain, 2002 Multimedia applications)
•Cognitive achievement of students in learning using
multimedia technology is better than traditional learning-
Apple Reports Of Education (1989) in Yusup Hashim,
(1997, pg241)
•The use of computers in teaching mathematics explain
well the importance of a topic in the syllabus of
mathematics as well improve the quality of teaching
mathematics ‘ -Cockcroft (1982)
•To achieve the goal of education in Malaysia, a paradigm
shift is needed in way of thinking and the use of
technology- (Wan Zahid, 1996)
METHODOLOGY
•The method used in this study is quantitative method which
used for identifying effectiveness use of courseware in
rounding off numbers in the teaching and learning of
mathematics.

•The data required for this study were collected through


questionnaires.

•Data are also collected through the pre-test and post-test


which conducted in the first week and sixth week.
•Data were analyzed descriptively based on Likert rating of
the questionnaire and the mean percentage of pretest and
post-test were recorded.

•SPSS program used to analyze the data.

Conclusion

•The results showed that the method of teaching and


learning using educational courseware in the classroom
successfully attract students and raise mathematics
achievement among students.

•Teaching and learning using the courseware is suitable to


be implemented to improve achievement of students.

•The Ministry of Education should focus on building more


appropriate educational courseware for mathematics.
