INTRODUCTION
In this module a simple transmission system is considered to show the
effect of sudden and large connection of load on voltage. This effect
is mitigated using a FACT device STATCOM .
Basic operation of STATCOM was discussed in previous module, now
we are analyzing the effect of using STATCOM in the system using a
software MATLAB 2017 on i7 5th generation processor.

3
SIMULATION MODEL

4
In this model a 25KV source is feeding 1MW of load through 50KM line, the
effect of sudden connection of 10MW on voltage is analyzed without
STATCOM in the system and with STATCOM in system. Hence various cases
are studied. The rating of STATCOM is 10MVA.

5
RESULT
The simulation time is 0.5sec and 10MW load is connected at 0.05sec

Following cases are considered here –

• Case 1 ( when only 1MW load is connected to the system )

• Case 2 ( when 10MW load is connected to the existing system
without STATCOM).
• Case 3 (when 10MW load is connected to the existing system
with STATCOM).

6
CASE 1 -

System operating normally voltage is at 1 pu.

7
CASE 2 -

Now the voltage across the load decreases to around 0.945 pu

8
CASE 3 -

After some transients voltage is restored to around 0.995 pu using STATCOM.

9
CONCLUSION

After analyzing the results of all cases we can say that STATCOM can
be used for mitigation of voltage dip in the system due to sudden
increase of load in the system.
