KNOWING AFRICAN LITERATURE

Africa, named so by Romans, is a continent of


great variety and contrast in land, climate,
languages, peoples, and cultures, but well into
the 19th Century, it was known to the Western
World as Darkest Africa.
Africa has been started to explore and
colonization by the Europeans in the 15th
Century.
KNOWING AFRICAN LITERATURE

It almost completed by the 19th Century, so that


by 1900, the continent was almost completely
divided up among the European colonial
powers.
In the mid-20th Century, Africa had been seen
the rapid rise of nationalism.
The old tribal structure gave way to the national
states and many villagers became townsfolk.
KNOWING AFRICAN LITERATURE

The early writings were focused on tribe, nature,


and the gods
Later, with the coming of the white man, many
writers extolled the Christian way of life and
virtues brought by the preaching of the
missionaries who controlled the printing press.
Recently, the literature of protest has for its
theme cultural emancipation.
