4 groups of students with 6 representatives will step on a
large sheet of paper. Questions will be raised by the
teacher and students divide the paper up and write their
answers on a whiteboard presented to the class when
you hear the signal “GO” while stepping on a placemat.
Make sure to keep all feet inside the paper to avoid
disqualification.
Soon as all parts of placemat has been folded, students
may now state the lesson learned from previous topic.

author and write your answers on the
board in any order within two minutes.
He was then tried at the Areiopagus, which
was the ancient Greek court, and banished from
his home city of Athens. He fled to the island of
Crete, where he began to work at the court of
King Minos and Queen Pasiphae, in the
magnificent palace of Knossos.
It is said that Daedalus was the first to
conceive masts and sails for ships for the navy
of Minos, helping Crete become a naval power.
The statues he carved were so exquisite, they
looked as if they were alive. It is said that they
would have escaped were it not for the chain that
bound them to the palace wall.
Daedalus also constructed a wooden cow for
the queen to hide in to satisfy her amorous
longings for a white bull sent by Poseidon. When
the dreadful Minotaur was born, Daedalus built
the Labyrinth to contain the monstrous half-man,
half-bull.
For years, Minos demanded a tribute of
youths from Athens to feed the creature as
punishment for the accidental killing of his son
while he was visiting Athens.
Eventually, the Athenian hero Theseus came to
Crete to attempt to slay the Minotaur. Princess
Ariadne, daughter of King Minos and Queen
Pasiphae, fell in love with Theseus and asked
Daedalus to help him.
Daedalus gave her a flaxen thread for Theseus
to tie to the door of the Labyrinth as he entered,
and by which he could find his way out after
killing the monster. Theseus succeeded, and
escaped Crete with Ariadne.

REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS
Reflexive sounds like reflection, the
image in the mirror that bounces back
at you. A reflexive pronoun reflects
back to the subject. A reflexive
pronoun can be used as the direct
object, indirect object, or object of a
preposition in a sentence.
Reflexive Pronouns

In other words, the pronouns are OBJECTS that are

used to refer to the SUBJECT of the sentence.

I made myself a sandwich.

Myself is referring to the subject which is I.

The following can be intensive or reflexive
pronouns depending on how they are used
in the sentence:
Reflexive Pronouns

Queen Pasiphae saw herself in the mirror.

The pronoun herself refers back to the subject.

Queen Pasiphae saw Queen Pasiphae in the

mirror.
Another example

My sister and I bought ourselves popcorn at

the movie.
Ourselves is referring to the subjects which, in
this sentence, is the two words sister and I.
Notice that these PRONOUNS must be used
with an antecedent.
An antecedent is the word that a pronoun is
referring to.
These create problems:
 Know When not to Use Reflexive Pronouns ...
 Do not use reflexive pronouns instead of
subject or object pronouns.
Error Correction

Mark and myself went to the Mark and I went to the

movies. movies.

Our teacher gave Sara Our teacher gave Sara

and myself an award for the and me an award for the
best project. best project.
Example

I gave myself plenty of time to get to work.

The dog scratched itself.

We treated ourselves to pizza.

You can make yourselves at home.

The children are able to dress themselves.
INTENSIVE PRONOUNS
Intensive is like intense. Something
intense is very strong. An intensive
pronoun emphasizes a preceding
noun, often the noun immediately
before the pronoun. It is not necessary
to the sentence.
Intensive vs. Reflexive Pronouns

Intensive is like intense. Something that is very strong.

An intensive pronoun is the same word used to
emphasize the SUBJECT of the sentence, which is
often (but not always) the noun immediately before
the pronoun. It is not necessary to the sentence.
Intensive pronouns look exactly the same as
reflexive pronouns, but they are only used for
EMPHASIS.
Example
The queen herself gave the knight the award.

The queen gave the knight the award herself.

Herself refers to the queen.

Using an intensive pronoun tells the reader (or listener) that

it's a big deal that the queen gave the award.
After all, she's not just anybody—she's the queen!
Both of them end
in –self or
–selves.
Example
1. Daedalus wondered aloud whether he himself was the
only one seeing what was happening.
2. Queen Pasiphae knew that she herself could make a
positive impact on the world, if only she put her mind to
it.
3. You yourself can easily transform your body: All it
takes is a proper diet and plenty of exercise.
4. The team knew that they themselves were responsible
for playing their best.
5. We ourselves are the ones who make the greatest
impact upon the world we live in.
Look at the following comparison to understand the difference.
Reflexive Intensive

The queen bought herself a dog. The queen bought the dog herself.

The queen bought something The intensive pronoun herself merely

for herself. emphasizes the fact that the queen
(not someone else) was the one who
She is both completing and bought the dog.
receiving the action in the sentence.

Notice how the meaning changes If the intensive pronoun is removed,

when we remove the reflexive the meaning doesn't change:
pronoun:
The queen bought the dog herself.
The queen bought herself a dog.
The queen still bought the dog
Did the queen buy the dog for herself, regardless of whether the intensive
or did she buy it for someone else? pronoun is in the sentence or not.
Without the reflexive pronoun,
there's no way to know for sure.
What do I remember?

Because intensive pronouns are used only

for emphasis, they can be removed from a
sentence without affecting its meaning.
The same is not true of reflexive pronouns,
which do cause a change in meaning when
removed from a sentence.
Hint:
If you're still not sure whom the pronoun is
referring to, ask yourself questions to break
down the sentence.
Find the subject (doer) and the verb (action):
Who saw? Queen Pasiphae saw.
(Queen Pasiphae is doing the action.)
Find the object:
What did Queen Pasiphae see?
= herself, Queen Pasiphae .
(Queen Pasiphae is also receiving the action.)
Practice What You've Learned
Directions: Decide whether the bold-faced pronoun is
reflexive or intensive. Thumbs up for Reflexive and
thumbs down for intensive.
1.I found the treasure box myself.
2. You yourself should know the rules for pronoun
usage.
3. When Jeremy found his wallet, he bought himself
an ice cream.
4. My neighbors found themselves involved in a lawsuit.
5. I gave you that worksheet myself so I know you
have it.

Pick at least five (3) sentences with pronouns. Rewrite the
statements and make the pronouns reflexive. Make sure these
pronouns reflect back to the subject of the sentence.

It is said to be Reflexive when pronouns are OBJECTS that are

used to refer to the SUBJECT of the sentence.
Example:
3He fled to the island of Crete,

Reflexive: 3He fled himself to the island of Crete
