In the first assessment, you can see that TM (sixth-grade IEP student/Fully Inclusive)
scored level 2 overall and two or more grade levels below on all four domains, which
consistently verifies his overall placement. This student has a severe learning disability
that makes it hard for him to retain information like other students. Everything I
taught him had to be visually aesthetic and colorful. He also had to have hands-on
materials, fraction bars, algebra tiles, manipulatives, ratio charts, etc., to grasp most
skills and concepts. Thankfully, this student and his parents were determined and
committed to doing anything that would promote his academic growth.

After working meticulously for five and a half months, TM made dramatic growth
across all four domains. He improved by three grade levels in Number and Operations
with a 67-point increase. He improved by one grade level in Algebra and Algebraic
thinking and also improved by four years in Measurement and Data with a 59-point
increase. Lastly, he had a 46-point increase in Geometry and grew three grade levels in
that domain.

TM is a fantastic example of a dramatic academic turnaround. Although this student

did not end the year on grade level he made dramatic progress toward that goal, and
with another year of a teacher providing the intensive supports he needs he can easily
be on grade level and continue to close the gap.
