AL KHAWARIJ
 Khawarij people known as kharijites
 Comes from word kha ra ja – to go out, exit, rebel
 History & Founder
- existed since the very early period of Islam
- during the time of the fourth Caliph, Ali, (who ruled
from 656 – 661 CE) there was a political war between
Ali and Mu’awiyah
- Al Muhakkimah
- Al Azaridah – Nafi’ Ibn Al Azraq
- Al Najdat – Najdah Ibn ‘Amir Al Hanafi & Yamamah
- Al ‘Ajaridah – ‘Abd Al Karim Ibn ‘Arjad
- Al Sufriah – Ziad Ibn Al Asfar
- Al Ibadah – ‘Abdullah Ibn Abad
 The reasons for existence
1) Politics – war
 Ideology/Origin
1) Declaring Muslims to be unbelievers.
2) Rejecting lawful obedience to the rulers.
3) Justifying violence against Muslims and innocent
people.
AL MURJI’AH
 Murji'ah comes from Irjaa‘
Murji’ah – those who postpone
Irjaa’ – postponement
The follower known as murjites
 History & Figure
- Began with the murder of ʿUthmān (third caliph) in AD 656
- ended with the assassination of ʿAlī (fourth caliph) in AD 661
- the subsequent establishment of the Umayyad dynasty (ruled
until AD 750)
- The movement of Al-Murji'ah started with the appearance of
the Khawarej and the Shiats.

1) Politics
2) With regards to kafir
 Ideology/Origin
1) faith does not increase or decrease
2) deeds do not affect the faith in anyway
3) nothing hurts whether it is a large sin or a small one
MU’TAZILAH
 Mu‘tazilah comes from I’tazala which means secede,
abstain, against the opinions of others
 Mostly use thinking
 Known as the rationalists of Islam
 History & Founder
- founded in Basrah and later developed in Baghdad
- in particular during al-Ma’mun’s caliphate from 813 to
833 CE
- Wasil bin ‘Ata

- With regards to religion only
 Ideology/Origin
1) a grave sinner ( fāsiq) could be classed neither as
believer nor unbeliever but was in an intermediate
position (al-manzilah bayna manzilatayn)
JABARIYAH
 From word jabara – forced, require to do something
 A sect of Muslims who deny free agency in man
 fatalism or predestination - human act has been
determine by qada and qadar
 rigid and extreme – pure Jabariyahs
 middle Jabiriyahs

- Appeared in 2nd century of Hijrah in Khurasan
- ja’d bin dirham

1) Human acts determined by qada’ and qadar
2) Paradise and hell is impermanent
3) Al Qur’an is creatures and not kalam Allah
