only one cell • There are 4 types of microorganisms: fungi, protozoa, algae and bacteria THE FUNGI KINGDOM • Can be seen easily without microscope • A few fungi are parasites. Athlete’s foot is caused by a fungus that feed on damp skin between the toes. • Example of organism under the fungi kingdom are yeast & mushroom MUSHROOM RING ATHLETE’S FOOT THE MONERA KINGDOM • Monera does not have a nucleus • There are 2 groups in this kingdom. They are the bacteria and blue- green algae • Some bacteria feed on the inside of living bodies, where they cause disease. • Diphteria, whooping cough, cholera, typhoid, tuberculosis, toxocara and food poisoning are all caused by bacteria BACTERIA • Found in water, air, on the surfaces of plant, animal, rock and inside living things too. • Reproduce by binary fission, where each bacteria divide into two • If condition dry and hot, some bacteria form spore • They can survive inside spore for a long time • They break out of the spore when favourable condition return Binary fission Bacterial spore BLUE-GREEN ALGAE • Lives in seas, ocean and lakes • Grow on wet rocks at the sides of stream and river. THE PROTOzoa • made from just one cell (unicellular) • Contain nucleus • Some make their food through photosynthesis like plants • Some feed as animal do • Outside body may have flagellum, or cilia (tiny hair) to help move in water • One kind of protozoan known as amoeba make projection from its body called pseudopodia • Pseudopodia help amoeba to move and find food • Some members of protoctista live in human and cause disease such as malaria, sleeping sickness and amoebic dysentry VIRUS • Virus do not have cell structure • They do not feed, respire or excrete • When they are placed on living tissue, they enter the living cell and reproduce • They destroy the cell and cause disease • Virus may cause influenza, chicken pox, measles, rabies, aids • Some microorganism give benefit to the environment such as decomposer • The decomposer will feed on the dead plant and animal, and thus break them down • The mineral from the body tissues are released into the soil and available for plants to take them up in their root • Decomposer ensure that mineral that living organism need are recycled thyphoid
