Physical change  change in size, shape, or state
without changing their composition.

Example:
Pounding a piece of
chalk
The chalk changed in
size and shape, but the
composition is still the
same.
When heat is applied to matter, matter may
change its state or phase.

Phase / State Changes

1. Liquification  solid to liquid
2. Solidification liquid becomes solid
3. Condensation gas becoming liquid
4. Evaporation liquid becoming a gas
5. Sublimation  solid to gas
liquification sublimation

Activity 1: What Happens to the Materials
When Heated and When Cooled?
Answer the following questions.
1. What happened to the candle?
2. When the candle melted, what it its state?
3. Is it still candle?
4. What do you call the process when solid turns to
liquid?
5. What have you collected on the tiles?
6. What is its state? Is it still a candle?
7. What do you call the process when liquid turns into
solid?
8. What kind of changed did the candle undergo?
9. What factors brought about such change?
How will you describe the changes in the properties of
the materials when they are heated and cooled?

When the materials are heated, they change their size, shape, and
texture. They also change their forms. When heated, the solid
materials are changed to liquid. When cooled, the liquid materials
are changed back to solid.
Test yourself. Answer the following
questions.
1. Under what condition will a candle melt?
a. when it is cooled b. when it is heated
2. Which of these will happen to the object that is
placed under the sunlight?
a. the temperature will disappear
b. the temperature will increase
3. Which of the following shows the effect of heat?

a b c
Activity: Ball and Ring Experiment

New words:
• Expand – to get bigger
• Contract – to get smaller
Guide Questions:
1. What did you observe when you initially put
the brass ring?
2. What did you observe when you fit the brass
ball (after heating) through the brass ring?
What does this observation tell you?
3. After cooling down the brass ball (by dipping
it into the water), what did you observe when
you fit it again through the brass ring? What
does this observation tell you? What caused
this to happen?
4.What property of the material is changed when the
material is heated? Cooled?

What examples of contraction and

expansion happens in our daily lives /
activities?
