Directions – Before and After: Conservation of Mass Poster Project

1. In your groups, decide roles: Leader, Scribe, Presenter, Researcher. Please refer to the following descriptions:
- Leader: Keeps team on-task. Coordinates between other group members so that the final project makes sense
together as one whole thing (cohesive). Keeps track of the time since you will only be working on the poster for 1 or 2
class periods.
- Scribe: Writes and organizes the visuals of the poster. Double checks the arithmetic in the inventory table. Works with
Researcher to decide on “relevant image” and whether it will be drawn or printed.
- Presenter: In addition to supporting other roles, the presenter will talk through the groups poster for 5 – 10 minutes
next class period. It might be easy for this role to Make sure you know what is going on so that you know what you
are talking about. Suggestions
- Researcher: In charge of finding relevant images, verifying facts from provided resource site, searching through the
textbook for other helpful information and finding other sites as needed.
2. Make sure that your poster has each section listed on the template. You may organize your poster slightly differently, but
please make sure your headings are clearly labeled.
3. Chemical Reaction and Equation. Please list the substances that are reacting, one application of the reaction, the type of
reaction that it is (acid-base, combustion, etc.) and copy the equation from your resource site.
4. Find or draw an image relevant to your reaction or its application. Use color! 
5. List the characteristics of a chemical change that your reaction has. Try to think of 2 or 3. (Hint: Refer to your completed
webercise handout)
6. Fill out the table, you may only have 2 “reactants” and “products.” List the name and formula of your substances, in
parenthesis include how many molecules are in the reaction (this will have to be multiplied in your inventory, I will help
you!).
7. Be sure you explain why mass is conserved or not. Include the numbers of each atom before and after to support your
reasoning.
8. Next class period the presenter will present your poster to the class. This should be 5 – 10 minutes. Explain why you chose
your picture and what conclusion you came to regarding the conservation of mass.
9. After everyone has presented, we will take 5 minutes to reflect on the project. This is a good time to comment on your own
effort, what you learned, and how you worked together as a group. Please include any struggles you may have had
completing the assignment as well. Feel free to ask any remaining questions you have also, I will go over those tomorrow as
we wrap up the unit.
10. Grades will be assigned as a group for the poster and individually for participation. Groups should work together actively to
receive full points in this category (please refer to the rubric).
