APPLICATIONS OF GIS

FOR GEOLOGY
Sorbi Genaleon R. Ildefonso
Objectives
 To define and describe GIS and its uses
 To enumerate the applications of GIS for
Geology
 To differentiate Geologic Mapping using
Traditional Methods with using GIS
 To give examples of Geologic Maps made
using GIS
What is GIS?
Database + Maps = GIS
What is GIS?
 GIS = Geographic Information Systems
 “.. a computer system capable of assembling,
storing, manipulating, and displaying
geographically referenced information, i.e.,
data identified according to their locations”
–USGS (1997)
 In simpler terms, GIS is a set of computer-
based systems for managing geographic data
to solve real-world spatial problems.
Common uses of GIS
 Visualization
 Location - “What is at..?” -
 Condition - “Where is it...?” -
 Trends and patterns -“What has changed since..?”

 Modelling and Simulation

 To determines what happens if something is
changed or something occurs such as
earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, traffic, flood etc.

Traditional With GIS

 Manual  Computer-based
 Graphing sheet or  Faster
tracing papers  Easier
 Re-tracing  Quality depend on
 Time-consuming the data source not
 Poor to Average on the process
quality
Applications of GIS in Geology

 Ground water
 Mining and Mineral exploration
 Geologic Hazard Mapping and Simulation
 Landslide
 Floods
 Volcanic Eruptions
 Tsunami
 Earthquakes
