Introduction

• Micro-drilling can be defined as the creation of very

small holes 0.5 millimeters or less in a suitable
material.
• Air bearings are bearings that use a thin film of
pressurized air to provide exceedingly low friction
load-bearing interface between surfaces.
• Our aim is to design a drilling machine that would be
capable of drilling small holes at a higher speed with
low power consumption.

Problem Definition
*Heavy
*Bulky
*Expensive
*Limited speed –limited drill hole
size
*High power consumption
*Require maintenance
*Noisy
*Not suitable for batch production
Objectives

• To drill micro holes at low cost.

• To synthesize a maintenance free drill
machine.
• To get greater precision holes of accurate size
with the use of air bearing.
• To develop a noiseless, light weight, portable
drill machine.

Scope of the Project

• A zero-wear technology is a perfect answer to

the seemingly unlimited cycles of high speed
machines.
• This machine could reach speed upto 100000
rpm of rotation and will be used for drilling
micro holes (i.e.for aluminium as for drilling
0.2 mm drill we need 40000 rpm.)

Experimental Work

• While designing we are considered different

considerations like aesthetic consideration, ergonomics
consideration, feasibility in manufacturing ,strength
considerations and optimum deign:-
• Material Selected- Acrylic bar
• Size of drill- 0.2 to 1.5mm
• Cutting torque - 0.003854 N-m
• Cutting Thrust - 6.11020 N
• Cutting Speed - 40,000 rpm
• Review Through Strength

Conclusion

• Until now we have successfully completed the

design of prototype on solid works
considering all the aspects from research
papers and design data book.
• Further we are planning to check the design in
Ansys and we are working on it and some
changes could be implemented if the design is
not safe.
