PROJECT REPORT

(Minor)
7th sem, Mechanical
Methodology
Hyperloop is based on a principle of
magnetic levitation.

The principle of magnetic levitation is that

a vehicle can be suspended and propelled on a
guidance track made with magnets.

 The vehicle on top of the track may be

propelled with the help of a linear induction
motor.
The Design
 The pod should be of circular cross section
like the shape of a capsule.

 Air bearings should be fitted across the

pod at equal distances to ensure proper
ejection of air.

 Front opening needs to be circular like that

of an aircraft engine.

End point or tail needs to be lifted for

improved capsule aerodynamics.
The devices and other system
involved (fabrication) -
Magnetic levitation- This mechanism will
lift the pod above the track against gravity
with the help of magnets on tube and the
magnetic field produced by the induction.

Induction motors- These are attached to

the pod to produce induction and straight
line motion to the pod initially.

 Compressor- The compressor used will be

of axial type fitted at the front of the pod, so
as to provide low pressure at front and pass
the air over and through the air bearings.

Air Bearings-The air bearing play an

equally important role like other parts as they
maintain the pod above the tube and also act
as suspension.
ADVANTAGES
 Faster

Safer

Lower cost

Pollution Free

Immune to weather

Resistant to natural
disasters
DIS-ADVANTAGES

 Tube pressure maintainance can

be a problem

Turning can be critical (with

large radius)

Less space for movement of

passenger inside the pod
CONCLUSION
 Since it has a number of advantages
over conventional mode of transport, it is
not far to be implemented by the countries
in near future.

This will open new dimensions in

development. And advancement in
technology will be superimposed to a new
level.
INTRODUCTION
Todays conventional modes of
transportation consists of four unique types:
rail, road, water and air. These modes of
transportation tend to be either relatively slow,
expensive, or a combination of both and
polluting.

So here arise a need for a new mode of

transportation that seeks to change this
pattern by being both fast and inexpensive and
also non-polluting.
WHAT IS HYPERLOOP ?
A hyperloop is a system to “build a tube
over or under the ground that contains a
special environment.” Hyper-pods would
basically be propelled in this tube. One
example could be a huge sort of pneumatic
tube where high-speed fans would compress
and push the air .
THE MAIN PARTS
 Low Pressure Tube

Capsule

Magnetic Levitation System

Axial Compressor

Suspension
WHY HYPERLOOP !
 The answer is simple, because it is less
power consuming, less time consuming, less
space consuming, fast and efficient mode of
transport.
History: In 1812, George Medhurst wrote a book
detailing his idea of transporting passengers and
goods through air-tight tubes using air
propulsion.

In the early 1800s, there were other similar

systems proposed or experimented with and were
generally known as an Atmospheric railway

The system worked at near-atmospheric

pressure, and the passenger car moved by means
of higher-pressure air applied to the back of the
car while somewhat lower pressure was
maintained on the front of the
In the 1910s, vacuum trains were first
described by American rocket pioneerRobert
Goddard.[103]

The innovations over early proposals for

reduced pressure or vacuum-tube
transportation apparatus, the work of Goddard
"appears to have the greatest overlap with the
Hyperloop".

Current: The ET3 Global Alliance (ET3) was

founded by Daryl Oster in 1997 with the goal
of establishing a global transportation system
using passenger capsules in
frictionless maglev full-vacuum tubes.
Elon Musk first mentioned that he was
thinking about a concept for a "fifth mode of
transport", calling it the Hyperloop, in July
2012

From late 2012 ntil Auguust 2013, a group of

engineers from both Tesla and SpaceX worked
on the conceptual modeling of Hyperloop.
4. BASIC PRINCIPLE OF HYPERLOOP

Hyperloop is based on a principle of

magnetic levitation. The principle of
magnetic levitation is that a vehicle can be
suspended and propelled on a guidance track
made with magnets. The vehicle on top of the
track may be propelled with the help of a
linear induction motor.
5. CONSTRUCTION
5.1 Tube : The tube is made of steel. There are
two tubes which are welded together side by
side configuration to allow the capsules travel
in both directions. The tube will be supported
by pillars. There is a solar arrays are provided
on a top of the tubes for the purpose of power
to the system.

5.2 Capsule: The capsule can carry 28

passengers at a time and it send at a very high
speed and it is levitated by a high pressure air
cushion. The design of capsule is start with the
aerodynamic shape. There are two version of
capsule are being considered: a passenger only
version and a passenger plus vehicle version.
5.3 Compressor: The compressor is fitted at the
front side of the capsule. It supplies the air to
the air bearings which supports the weight of
the capsule. The compressor allows the capsule
to traverse to the low pressure tube without
choking the air flow that travels between tube
walls and capsule.
5.4 Suspension: Air bearing suspension offers
stability and extremely low drag at a feasible cost.
A stiff air bearing suspension is superb for
reliability and safety. When there is a gap
between ski and tube walls is high then it shows
the nonlinear reaction and which results in large
restoring pressure.

5.5 Propulsions: To accelerate and decelerate the

capsule the linear induction motor is used in
hyperloop system. It provides some advantages
over a permanent magnet motor. To accelerate
the capsules there is linear accelerators are
constructed on a length of the tube. Stators are
placed on the capsules to transfer momenum to
the capsules via the linear accelerators.
8. CONCLUSION

1. A high speed transportation system known as

Hyperloop has been developed in this report.
2. Hyperloop transportation system can be used
over the conventional modes of transportation
that are rail, road, water and air.
3. At very high speed it provides better comfort
and cost is also low.
4. By reducing the pressure of the air in the tube
which reduces simple air drag and enables the
capsule to move faster than through a tube at
atmospheric pressure.

9. FUTURE WORK

1. Improve the passenger capacity.

2. Detailed station designs with loading and
unloading of passenger
3. Safety features improvement.
4. It can be used in material handling deices.
