Use of new Technologies III

The technological breakthrough in recent years has
changed the way things are done. The educational
sector is also inserted in this digital revolution and
there are currently several technological tools and
digital educational methodologies available for
teaching the foreign language. In this scenario, several
challenges arise, the biggest one is perhaps the lack of
familiarity that some educators have regarding new
technologies, as a teacher I am interested in learning
more about educational management platforms such
as moodle since I know that the domain of this digital
knowledge is necessary to better adapt to the students
of generation C and that is why I have learned to use
these technologies and one of them I already use is to
stimulate the creation of podcasts encouraging the
student to create and share these audio files in social
networks, thus creating a digital community; this type
of approach makes the learning process more
autonomous and students are more interested because
it gives the student the freedom to be more connected
to the cultural aspects and the wide variety of
discourses available in the worldwide network.
What makes a global language?

Why a language becomes a global language has little to do with

the number of people who speak it. It is much more to do with
who those speakers are.
Graddol: (1997:16) states that” technology lies at the heart
of the globalization process; affecting education work and
culture. The use of English language has increased rapidly
after 1960. At present the role and status of
English is that it is the language of social context, political,
sociocultural, business, education, industries, media,
library, communication across borders, and key subject in
curriculum and language of imparting education”.
In our globalized world communication tends to be
multimodal and that’s why it’s important that ELT
teachers adapt to technological changes and bring this
to the classroom. As a teacher I understand the
importance of to seek semiotic resources to
incorporate it in the process of English teaching.
Multimodal communicative competence involves more
than verbal , it’s the knowledge of language gestural,
audio, visual, spatial and computer-mediated
communication.

Technology provides options in order to make

teaching interesting and more productive in
terms of improvements (SHYAMLEE, 2012).
Computers will not replace teachers. However,
teachers who use computers will replace
teachers who don’t. —Ray Clifford, Defense
Language Institute
I found the content of this video
interesting because I hadn’t thought
about the problematic of global
language and the threatening way that it
means about the real possibility of what
can be lost when a language dies. It’s
terrifying to think that somehow we
English teachers are contributing in
some way to the extinction of some
languages that represent the culture
and heritage of a people, there is a
certain responsibility that we need to
take, not only in teaching a foreign
language but also in respecting the first
language and celebrating this diversity
by not creating barriers in knowledge.

Thoughts
Technology is not static and it’s always on the move
and that is why the English language teacher who
wants to work with tech tools needs to be always up
to date with the new technological trends and what I
do to stay connected, is to be an active participant in
the digital community because I know that much of
this knowledge is available and free and easy to
access, but I also recognize the importance of
specialized courses and so I intend to continue
learning about the current technological trends so
it’s in my plans postgraduate education on this
subject once I already got a degree in information
systems.
ELT Technology tools for classroom

Mind Maps is one the

tools that really cought
my attention because I
think it’s easy to use and
dinamic.
http://popplet.com/
Is one of the sites
presented on the
material that I really
enjoyed.
My personal note is 8, could have
been a 9 but unfortunately for
reasons of bad internet connection in
my city I could not watch the video
lessons with the necessary quality as I
wish and for this reason the PDF
material for me had greater use in
my learning. I learned concepts that I
had no idea and I found the
technological tips of the tools cited as
Linotype, mindmap, popplet, etc.
super interesting. The thing that
caught my attention was the concepts
about multimodal communication
and how I can use this approach in
language teaching English.
