National Urban League & Jobs

The National Urban League has a strong focus on

job creation, with a network of 100 affiliates in 36
states that serve as workforce intermediaries. Jobs
with living wages and good benefits is our primary
goal for 2010 and ahead. Here are some quick facts
about recent initiatives:

National Urban League & Jobs
 Our six-point plan for job creation seeks a federal investment
of $168 billion over two years for direct job creation, job
training for the chronically employed, greater access to credit for
small businesses and counseling for people mired in the
foreclosure process.
 We called for the creation of a $10 billion small business lending fund and
a $30 billion lending fund was recently passed by Congress.

 Our Mature Worker Program (MWP) is funded by the
Department of Labor (DOL) to serve persons age 55 and older
that are unemployed and have low-incomes. The program goals
include placing participants in part-time community service
training positions that enhance their skills, enabling them to
transition into unsubsidized jobs.
 MWP currently serves a total of 1,800 participants annually.

rate of 92%. At least 65% of participants either received job placement or
attained a high school diploma or GED.

Challenges for the Next Century of the
Urban League Movement

Blacks remain twice as likely as whites to be unemployed, three times more likely to live in poverty and more than six
times as likely to be imprisoned.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that Hispanics and Blacks continue to be unemployed at rates far higher than the
nation overall, with Latino unemployment at 12.7% and Black unemployment rising to 15.4%.

Only 40% of Blacks graduate from four year institutions.

By race/ethnicity and sex the obesity prevalence was highest for non-Hispanic black women (39.0%) followed by
non-Hispanic black men (32.1%.)
