What is CULTURE?
Culture is consists of Material and
Non Material Culture

Anthropologist maybe more

interested in material culture while
sociologist develop primarily
interest in non-material culture.
MATERIAL
CULTURE
{ Includes physical objects or
artifacts – things that human being
create by alternating the natural
environment.
NON- MATERIAL
CULTURE
{ Consists of words people use, the
habits they follow , the ideas, the
customs, behavior, of any society
profess and to which they strive to
perform.

NORMS
1. These are guides or
models of behavior which
tell us what is proper and
which are appropriate or
non appropriate, right or
wrong.
The ff. form of social norms:

Folkways- are the customary

ways. They are the repetitive or
typical habits and patterns of
expected behavior followed
within a group of community.
The ff. form of social norms:

Mores- In contrast to folkways,

mores seen as extremely
important and are considered
vital. It defines what is morally
right or wrong.
The ff. form of social norms:

Laws- They are norms that are

enforced formally by a special
political organization. Ex.
Constitution, Declaration of
Human Rights and etc.
VALUES
1. Define what is right, good
and moral. The values of
society shapes its
normative system and
guide the behavior of its
people.

use of language , we can go beyond by
transmitting simple feelings and emotions

CRAZES

They are short-lived social norms with

people are expected to comply with. They
may operate as forces of social change.
Ex. New trends of clothing, hairdo, music,
houses etc. The prestige of a person
depends on this use of these new styles.
FUNCTIONS OF CULTURE
 It serves as a TRADEMARK.
 It brings together and interprets the values of society.

 It provides basis for social solidarity.

 It molds the social personality.

 It provides behavioral pattern for the society.
