The term Engineering is derived from the Latin word
ingenium, meaning "cleverness" and ingeniare, meaning "to
contrive, devise".
Electrical engineering is one of the newer
branches of engineering, and dates back to the late
19th century. It is the branch of engineering that
deals with the technology of electricity. Electrical
engineers work on a wide range of components,
devices and systems, from tiny microchips to huge
power station generators.
Specialization areas in Electrical Engineering:

 Bioengineering , acoustics and magnetic resonance engineering

 Control system
 Power and Energy system
 Power Electronics
 Electromagnetics
 Communication system
 Signal Processing
 Remote sensing and space science
BIO-ENGINEERING

Biological engineering or bio-

engineering, also referred to
as biomedical engineering (BME), is the
application of principles of biology and
the tools of engineering to create usable,
tangible, economically viable products
CONTROL SYSTEM

A control system is a device, or set of devices, that manages,

commands, directs or regulates the behaviour of other devices or
systems .
POWER AND ENERGY SYSTEM:

Power and energy systems emphasizes all aspects of

electrical energy, innovation in energy generation and
distribution, grid intelligence, renewable resources, electric
transportation, and efficient devices and buildings .
POWER ELECTRONICS

Power electronics as a subject is a hybrid of power

engineering, analog electronics, semiconductor devices and
control systems.
ELECTROMAGNETICS:

Electromagnetism is the study of the electromagnetic force, a type of physical

interaction that occurs between electrically charged particles. The
electromagnetic force usually exhibits electromagnetic fields such as electric
fields, magnetic fields and light, and is one of the four fundamental
interactions(commonly called forces) in nature.
Most of the things we consider “technology” these days use E&M principles in
one way or another.
COMMUNICATION SYSTEM:

A communication system is a collection of communication

equipments that is integrated into a coherent system. These
allow different people to stay in touch over a geographical
system.
SIGNAL PROCESSING:
By processing we mean operating in some fashion on a signal to extract
some useful information. For example when we hear something we use
our ears and auditory path ways in the brain to extract the information.
The signal is processed by a system.
REMOTE SENSING:
Remote sensing is the science of obtaining information about
objects or areas from a distance, typically from aircraft or
satellites.
Emerging trends in Electrical Engineering:

 Renewable Energy
 Smart grid
 Electric Vehicles
 Power system
 Robotics

SMART GRID

A smart grid is an electricity network based on digital technology that is

used to supply electricity to consumers via two-way digital
communication. This system allows for monitoring, analysis, control and
communication within the supply chain to help improve efficiency,
reduce energy consumption and cost, and maximize the transparency and
reliability of the energy supply chain. The smart grid was introduced
with the aim of overcoming the weaknesses of conventional electrical
grids by using smart net meters.
ELECTRIC VEHICLES
An electric vehicle, also called an EV, uses one or more electric
motors or traction motors for propulsion. An electric vehicle may be
powered through a collector system by electricity from off-vehicle
sources, or may be self-contained with a battery, solar panels or
an electric generator to convert fuel to electricity
POWER SYSTEM

Power system comprises of all the components that are used in

generation, transmission and distribution of electricity or power.
The fast development of power electronics based on new and
powerful semiconductor devices has led to innovative technologies,
such as high voltage DC transmission (HVDC) and flexible AC
transmission system (FACTS), which can be applied in transmission
and distribution systems.
Having advanced data collection capabilities, SCADA system plays a
significant role in power system operation.
ROBOTICS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Robotics brings together several very different engineering areas

and skills. Robotics deals with the design, construction,
operation, and use of robots, as well as computer systems for
their control, sensory feedback, and information processing.
These technologies are used to develop machines that can
substitute for humans and replicate human actions.

Artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine

intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in
contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and
other animals.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Electrical Engineers can work in :

Atomic power plants

Hydro or Thermal power plants
Railways
Civil Aviation
Electricity board
Utility companies
Electrical Design and consultancy firms
Manufacturing Industry

An Electrical Engineer is expected to undertake the following duties:

Design and develop more efficient electrical machinery

Control Equipment for electricity generation
Guide and organize manufacturing, construction, installation, maintenance, support,
documentation and testing to assure conformation with specifications, codes and
customer requisites.
Transmission and distribution of electrical energy and telecommunication.
