What is Contemporary Dance?
 Contemporary dance is a genre of dance performance that
developed during the mid twentieth century and has since
grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally
trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly
strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe.
 It also employs contract-release, floor work, fall and
recovery, and improvisation characteristics of modern
dance.Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and
direction are often used, as well
Alice Reyes
 Alice Reyes was born on 14 October 1942. She
is the eldest of five children of Adoracion
Garcia and Ricardo Reyes . Both her parents
were musicians trained at the University of
the Philippines.
 Her Mother was a singing teacher and taught
among other things.
 Her father Ricardo is known as "Mr.
Philippine Folk Dance“
 Alice Reyes was married to the American
Richard Upton from 1972 to 1982. Together
they had two children, a boy and a girl.
Afterwards Reyes remarried with the
American Theodore Van Dorn.
 After her primary and middle school education at
Maryknoll College Alice started as a dancer at
Bayanihan Dance Company , where she traveled
around the country with her father to give dance
performances.
 In the sixties she studied again at Maryknoll
College where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts
degree in 1964
 She then studied in the United States , where she
graduated in 1969 at the Sarah Lawrence College
. She also followed training and education by
prominent dancers and choreographers.
 She was the founder of Ballet Philippines (BP), the
country’s premiere company in ballet and
contemporary dance, the multi-talented dancer,
choreographer, and artistic director
 She is among the recently proclaimed National Artist
by President Benigno Simeon Aquino 3rd on June 20.
 the striking 72-year-old is also responsible for initiating
the professionalization of dance arts in the country,
with her persistence in raising funds for her company,
so that BP performers can become full-time dancers
with decent earnings.
Lisa Teresita Pacheco Macuja-Elizalde
 She was born on October 3, 1964. She is
a Prima Ballerina. In 1984, she became
the first Filipina prima ballerina, and
first foreign soloist to ever join the
Kirov Ballet.
 In the Philippines, she is the Artistic
Director of Ballet Manila and Vice-
Chairman of the Philippine UNESCO
National Commission. She was also the
Commissioner of the National
Commission on the Role of Filipino
Women.
 She is also Directress and faculty
member of the Ballet Manila School – a
training center for ballet professionals
who are steeped in the Russian
Vaganova method.
 She is the daughter of Cesar Macuja and Susan Pacheco.
She is the second among four siblings.
 At the age 8, she started her first ballet class with
Felicitas Layag-Radaic as her mentor, who kept a
vigilant eye on her early years as a ballerina, and saw
her through five Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD)
syllabus examinations in the ten years while she was
under her school. At age 11, she danced onstage for the
first time in a ballet recital called Twinkle Toes in Tinsel
Land that was shown on February 29, 1976 at the
Meralco Theater, Pasig City, Philippines.
 Macuja married Fred J. Elizalde on June 7, 1997. The
couple have two biological children, Michelle Elizabeth
"Missy" Macuja Elizalde, born July 28, 1998, and Manuel
Cesar "Mac" Macuja Elizalde, born August 27, 2000.

Douglas Nierras
 Founder and resident
choreographer of Powerdance
 “making dance more accessible
to a greater number of
audiences”
 Douglas Nierras is known for
his work on Nine Deaths of the
Ninja (1985), Emir (2010) and
Boy Golden (2013).
 In the past 25 years, the Douglas Nierras Powerdance
(DNPD) company has always distinguished itself with its
heart-wrenching choreography interpreted with rawness,
dynamism and soulful expression. Fresh from its European
concert touer, DNPD will hold its homecoming concert,
“Sayaw ng Puso at Kaluluwa: Ang Pagbabalik” on Sep. 29 at
Meralco Theater.
 One of Nierras’ greatest works was inspired by Basil Valdez
songs such as “Kapag Ako ang Magmahal” and “Ngayon at
Kailan Man.” The dancers are dressed in black trousers
with suspenders and white T-shirts, looking like piano keys.
The counter-rhythms, the changes of formation, and the
expressive strength of the work are so lucid, the audience
is mesmerized.
 Nine Deaths of the Ninja (1985)-Two anti-terrorist
agents are assigned to free a busload of American
schoolchildren in the Philippines who are taken
hostage by terrorists.

Norbert Dela Cruz 111
 Norbert De La Cruz III has gained
choreographic attention at the early age.
Born in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya,
Philippines and raised in Los Angeles, CA,
he has been discovering his voice in the
complex terrain of Contemporary Dance.
 One of the DANCE MAGAZINE’s Top 25 To
Watch for 2016, New York and Los
Angeles-based artist .
 Dance as a soloist Opera House and in
other dance companies in Europe.
 Norbert was initially coached in Cecchetti,
Vaganova, and movement exploration
techniques evoked by ballet masters Vera
Ninkovic and Marat Daukayev.

Leonor Orosa-Goquingco
 Leonor Orosa-Goquingco (July 24, 1917 – July 15,
2005) was a Filipino national artist in creative
dance.
 She could play the piano, draw, design scenery
and costumes, sculpt, act, direct, dance and
choreograph.
 Her pen name was Cristina Luna and she was
known as Trailblazer, Mother of Philippine
Theater Dance and Dean of Filipino Performing
Arts Critics.
 Leonor Orosa-Goquingco was born on July 24, 1917 in
Jolo, Sulu. Her parents were Sixto Orosa and Severina
Luna, both doctors who graduated from the
University of the Philippines. She was married to
Benjamin Goquinco and had three children: Benjamin,
Jr., Rachelle and Regina.
 She died on July 15, 2005 of cardiac arrest following a
cerebro-vascular accident at the age of 87.
